An Update Broke My Garmin GPS

Hi everyone,

I tried to update my GPS the other day via the official program from the company and install the newest maps. After installing the update my device doesn't operate as it should be. It keeps reboot itself while using it and goes to the "update mode".

I contacted the company many times, they told me to do a hard reset but didn't help. Now they told me if none of the troubleshooting fixing my problem just buy a new device!

So they broke my unit and asking me to buy a new one!

Is there anything I can do? Any ideas? The GPS is from Garmin and comes with lifetime maps.

    Warranty?

What's the model? Try a Google search and see if it's a common problem with your model. Might be a fix.

    Edit: check this out https://forums.garmin.com/forum/garmin-express/garmin-expres…

Maybe it's just a corrupted file from your SD card that you can format and start again.

    • From a quick read, OP:

      1. Did the GPS unit run out of battery while updating? That can cause the mapfile update to be corrupted (if it turns off halfway through).

      2. Try a factory reset of the device while it's plugged in and charging: https://www.gpsnation.com/support/gps-factory-reset/garmin-n…

      3. Go buy a new one.

      • 1- it had some charge + it was plugged toy computer while it's updating.

2- already did it but didn't fix the problem.

3- most likely going to buy one if I am out of options but not from Garmin.

          1. As the linked forum says, plugging into Computer might not provide enough power to keep it powered/charged through the update process, so the question is still: "Did it run out of battery during the update process?"

          2. Did you try GangGang's suggestion of trying to update again?

          3. Sure, but this still may or may not be Garmin's fault.

          From your other comment:

I read somewhere it's common with the model

You still haven't answered: "What model?"

        • @HighAndDry:

I will post the model when I get home. I don't have it with me.

The screen was on the whole time during the update. And I tried to re-install couple of times but didn't help. I will try to re-update it using the SD card.

          Thanks for your help.

Try charging it for a while (not from PC, or from PC but not turned on) for a while before rebooting? It seems it might be a battery issue, but that might also mean it's time to buy a new unit.

Or if you can source a replacement battery.

    • My warranty expireed hence why they recommend to buy new device.

I updated the GPS via the USB cable contacted to the computer. So no SD card involved.

I read somewhere it's common with the model to have this problem and not sure why it happened.

  • As GangGang states, only warranty will assist, If its past that, its in the T&C's of the update of own risk. however I am unsure if this is any breach with our consumer laws.

    • It depends. Unless it's a thousand dollar GPS unit, I have a hard time thinking that the ACL will say its useful life exceeds the few years that the warranty runs for. Not to mention so many things can go wrong with updates that they're almost always "at your own risk".

  • Which model is it?

    • Which model is it.

Some of the bicycle (Edge) gamins have the option of dropping back to a previous firmware.

You'll have to go searching out dcrainmakers site to find out how its done.
