  • And I would not consider holding 1 more year for a 5G since I am not sure what sort of 5G data I would get with it. Price on 5G plans can be a killer and my 5G phone won't be that useful if I put a 4G card on it.

I will let the 5G bandwagon roll on for a year and then consider a 5G phone.

At the end of the day, the longer you wait to buy a phone the more likely it will be better, given technology advancements. Just purchase a phone now and wait till we actually get 5G in Australia before you buy a device that is capable.

The poll is missing option… I have no specific timeline that I use to drive my upgrades.

My phone is no different than any other possession… I'll keep it as long as it continues to reliably serve the purpose that I bought it for and it meets my immediate needs.

I have always been confused by how the masses have fallen into this belief that phones are somehow special compared to other items, rather than protesting loudly at the ever shortening planned obsolescence windows that we allow manufacturers to get away with.

    • Same, seems to be 3-4 years for me.

The thing is though unless you're really in IT or have teenagers brain, most people barely use 40% of the functions available on a phone

Roughly the same for me… no because the phone no longer has the functions that I want - smartphone innovation stopped several years ago, all the new features since have been fluff - mores that the batteries dies of old age and genuine or quality after market replacements are impossible to find.

My first nokia GSM brick kept going for almost a decade. I believe I was on my third (genuine!) battery was still going strong when I 3G + Data became accessible enough to warrant an upgrade.

Exactly the problem for me with my Nexus 6P. Widespread issues associated with battery ageing with no first-party replacements available, third-party options being a mess of fakes and clones, and the job itself being difficult for someone not experienced in phone repairs. I'd be more than happy to still be using it if it wasn't for that.

    • Plus, plus, plus.

This and the "subscription business model" for software.

      Stuff the greedy &**^^&&(*

And the mindset that allows the ideas to prosper.

  • When my current phone becomes bogged down;
Note 3 i had since release up until S8 release, although i'll probably get S10 because it's hyped to be dope being it's 10th S phone

    • hype dope 10 bro

oh so you are telling me the note9 I just bought wont work on the 5G network, FFS great

    • My understanding is not even one phone that is currently on the market is 5g ready

  • +2

What's 5G going to get me?

  • depends how much I spent on the phone…

had xiaomi's in the past… changed them every year… bought a Samsung s7 last year…will be holding onto it till performance is significantly poor or I break it.

  • I was going to hold out for 5G, but they they banned Huawei and ZTE from supplying equipment which probably sets back the project by a fair amount and/or raises the costs to unreasonable levels.

    So…right now I don't know :p

    • ZTE were subject to a trade embargo so no company in their right mind will touch them now.

Optus currently supply Huawei NTU's as part of their fibre network. You may be referring to the NBN.

      • No, I mean 5G

  • I will exhaust my data allowance in 2 seconds on 5G.

Upgrade when the current phone is no longer fit for purpose.

But how are you going to impress your friends and look cool without the latest iCrap device? How will they know how unique and interesting a person you are without upgrading every year? I think you really need to re-evaluate your priorities in life if this isn't something that is dearly important to you. /signed iMillenial

  • Got a S7 edge after my Iphone 5 died - Dont intend on getting new phone until this one dies or they come up with something GROUP BREAK

So far new phones seem to have a slightly better camera and that is about it they have people hooked on updating ever year or ever 2nd year but the features have pretty much plateaued…

  • This has been asked before. I think most users here don't update regularly as it is a waste of money.
But I like to consider updating each year.
The sooner you sell your phone the higher it can be sold for.

The Samsung Galaxy line often removes features. I would upgrade if it actually meant an improvement.

I'm looking forward to the foldable Galaxy X and would consider getting it just for the novelty of having new technology.

  • When my phone is becoming too slow and cumbersome, I do everything on it that I would do if I was getting a new phone and selling it.

Back everything up, do a complete wipe, and start again.

It's amazing how different the phone can feel once you've done a factory reset, and don't store much on the phone. (A phone will be incredibly slow if the storage is close to full. Deleting a few large video files, or deleting all your old podcasts will make a big difference)

  • 5G hasn’t been ratified yet, so no one is making a 5G phone cause there are no specifications in the infrastructure required. Might be 2020 at the very earliest.

  • upgrade when the current phone breaks

  • Historically up to 3X times per generation of tech - UMTS, LTE - but forward-looking, probably 2X as the drawcard features become less and less in my prediction. Big T supposedly 200 sites 5G for Christmas 2018, so handsets shortly thereafter.

  • It surely can't be just me who is satisfied with the speed of the 4G network?
Not to mention 5G will not be widespread for many years yet. As soon as you step out of the CBD you'll lose 5G coverage?
