Binglee online requesting copy of ID

recently purchased a plasma tv from the recent binglee deal they had (17/02/2011 - paypal account charged same day). they are now asking for a copy of my drivers licence and credit card to confirm ID.

ive used paypal for years (shortly after they it first came onine) and have never had this request made by a Paypal Merchant.

curious as to whether anyone else has had a similar experience.

FYI, i called up paypal, and they were absoloutely and completely adamant that i should not do so, and the whole point of using Paypal is so there is no reason to divulge that sort of information over the net.

  • Have you called binglee and passed on what Paypal told you?

They might be taking it upon themselves to do some additional verification, but as per what Paypal told you, you shouldn't be required to provide it.

  • Yeah, perhaps will more expensive items they want to verify a little more before sending it out and never seeing it again. I'm sure PayPal is subject to fraud too, dodgy peeps with stolen cards.

    • Yep - if they ship to you and you go back to your Credit Card provider and do a chargeback claiming unauthorised use, the vendor (Bing Lee) will lose the dispute and have to pay back Paypal.

So, what they are doing is verifying your delivery address (on Paypal) is the same as your Licence and Card address. Paypal calls it a "confirmed address"

  • Well after calling PayPal, i was advised to get Binglee to call them up, which they did. and they advised them that it was unncessary and contrary to the whole point of PayPal, for them to request additional forms of identification.

So Binglee called me back, and told me all good to go.

    :)
