Vodafone Australia and TPG Telecom plan to merge into a single $15 billion telecommunications firm in an attempt to more effectively challenge mobile giants Telstra and Optus.

The companies have confirmed to the ASX they plan an all-scrip merger of equals, with the deal expected to complete next year subject to approval from regulators including the Foreign Investment Review Board and competition watchdog.

TPG shareholders would own 49.9 per cent of the newly merged group - called TPG Telecom Ltd - with Vodafone Australia shareholders owning 50.1 per cent.

Guess if this happens this might stop TPG building their own mobile network.

Will this deal still go ahead?

Not being called Vodafone due to reputation?

I’m not sure tpg’s rep is much better, if at all

Maybe they tossed a coin to determine the name.

Really? I actually have a pretty good view of TPG. They're budget and cheap, but they deliver core services pretty well if you don't need fancy customer service. (In my experience anyway).

    • They still have 10 year license to use the vodafone brand.

I suppose the mobile services will still be sold under Vodafone ads whereas broadband and NBN will be TPG.

      new name?

      TPFone?

      • That works for me.

      • Will relist on ASX as TPG Telecom Ltd.

  • what happens to pricing/offerings ?

This is the ongoing process of consolidation.

In the end there will be two or three ISPs only and prices will be skyhigh because profit seeking entities control the entire market. We have already seen this in America.

In Europe where they have nationalised internet prices are low because no one is seeking a profit. And in fact no privatised internet is cheaper than nationalised internet.

Our politicians are liars and con artists and now you are paying with your money.

Oh, and the service is shit too. Unlike Europe.

    • Dunno why you got a thumbs-dowm for that…here have a thumbs up to balance the scales.

    • This is the ongoing process of consolidation.

This isn't the right complaint. You'd rather a market filled with more bigger/equally sized competitors, than two outsize companies (Telstra & Optus) and a smattering of far smaller players.

Of course, it'd be better if it was a large number of smaller players, but it's already too late for that seeing as we have Telstra and Optus already.

  • "When questioned on Thursday about TPG's proposed $10 a month mobile plans Teoh said it was possible that the pricing could be even more aggressive than that. But he indicated that the plans would only be available as a bundled package of services." AFR
