  • Man, how good was Mathletics?

I 'tried to try out' the software, but nothing seemed to work. Everything I tried to initiate resulted in an endlessly spinning 'loading' wheel, but nothing ever loaded. I have a decent internet connection, the problem is not at my end. Humorously, I was prompted to 'sign-up to save [my] achievements]' on every screen.

Unfortunately, I was never afforded the opportunity to rack up any 'achievements'; nothing on the site/system worked. I would be interested to hear if others have a similar experience. Curiously, even the Australian version of the website/platform loads up with US English set as the default. In its current form, there is no way I would waste any time exposing any kids to this. If things don't "work/start happening" within about 10 or 20 seconds, young kids will develop a negative (bored) association with something almost immediately. Once that has happened, it can be hard to 'restore the faith', even if the product is substantially improved at some point in the future.

May I ask OP, what was this (or these?) 'award/s' that this 'award-winning program' has won, and re your claim that it '… has proven to help improve maths test scores by 34%', what is/where is that proof, exactly?

    • Bunch of awards posted at the bottom of their website. Not sure what the rewards are for though.

If a website doesn't provide a direct link to research that confirms their claim it's usually one of three reasons:
      1) the research isn't very good
      2) the research has some significant limitations on its findings
      3) they do not have permission (usually rare and normally they provide a citation)

Now I know Catherine Attard's research is generally pretty good from past experience. I did some digging and finally found the paper. This except from the executive summary is all you need to know:

"it is not possible to claim whether or how much the use of Matific influenced this outcome as students would be expected to show some growth when exposed to teaching, regardless of what resources are used."

One weakness in the research design is lack of control group.

It's also important to know the limitations of mathematics games. My own research into mathematics games and achievement has shown that it's not an effective way to teach concepts and is generally only recommend to supplement learning.

  • Government spends millions on new teaching methods, yet standards are lower in literacy and numeracy than they were 20 years ago ….maybe just do what they did 25 years ago as a start, but back then my science teacher had a science degree, maths teachers had maths degree.

My son actually loves Naplan, I expalined to him he will be doing tests for the rest of his life so he should get used to it.
