OzBargain Roundtable - Flavoured Milk (Quick Survey)

Hi guys,

I'm currently in my final year studying Advertising at Swinburne University, and this semester we've been tasked with working for a client who works within the FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) sector manufacturing flavoured milk. As part of our research, we're required to conduct an investigation into consumer habits regarding the consumption of flavoured milk within Australia.

I've put together a short survey on behalf of our student agency, Chalk & Cheese. I'm hoping to gather as many responses as possible and your participation will be greatly appreciated. For those unable to complete the survey, feel free to vote on your preferred brand via the poll.

Please note that all the information obtained in this research is used for academic purposes only and all your responses are completely anonymous.

Nobody does lactose-free flavoured milk varieties, so the answer I'm going to go with None since I just make my own with re-used juice bottle + lactose free milk from WW / Aldi + a heaping tablespoon of hot chocolate or Moccona.

or the new cold brew almond milk stuff that is now in WW, which I found pretty good.

    • Moderator status of Ozb checks out

    • Oh so scrimshaw has a sensitive tummy to dairy.. interesting who would have known.

    • coles has iced coffee vitasoy and they also sell Nippys which is UHT milk, so if you can handle it try that.
the vitasoy is in the refrigerated area but the nippys is in the longlife milk in a pack of 4.
i can handle ice cream and the nippys flavoured milk but not sure what you can handle.
i think big M and all those other ones gives me upset stomach.

that is a great tip though, i shouldnt probably just make my own to save money haha.

      • If you can handle white milk you could be sensitive to the bad bacteria that is often much much higher in flavored milk.

        • i can handle UHT milk and soymilk
          not full cream milk.

        • @Hirolol:ahh ok then, i cant buy milks within 2-3 days of used by, longer is better though. I dont need a loose bowel rofl.

    • Nobody does lactose-free flavoured milk varieties

Pauls Zymil Chocolate or Strawberry :)

  • Rokeby Farms

    • Surely i'm not the only one, they're always sold out when they are on special for $3.

      Heres a refresher of what the drink i mean;
      https://cdn0.woolworths.media/content/wowproductimages/large…

      • I honestly have never seen that before. Maybe it's a local brand/label?

        • Possibly, they are sold through out Vic though from the CBD to the country side in both Woolies & Coles, i'm not sure about other states.

At one stage was sold by Aldi too but they discontinued it

        • same this seems maybe state or store specific

Never seen one in Sydney all my life living here for past 30 in November years

I don't drink bovine juice. woolworths have the Vitasoy 1ltr refrigerated choc soy milk that is regularly on sale for $2 which I enjoy.

    • +4

I don't drink soy, the screams of the murdered soy beans is too much for me

      • +2

Beat me to it. It's basically crushed plant blood! What savages…

        • You crush them? I thought you just needed a very small stool and bucket?

      • -1

        Yawn

    • I felt that.

    • +1

coles has iced coffee vitasoy if you were looking!

      • thanks, I tried it yesterday. not bad at all. (though choc is still my favourite)

  • +1

    Breaka.

  • +3

    breaka choccy milk

always thought the plastic in the bottles were of a 'superior quality'

i've arrived at this conclusion well from 15 years or so of using them for homemade bongs

  • Used to love the old M (not sure if it is related to the Big M but I remember an M way in the way back).

Now am an Oak boy since the competition is kind of either bland or not as creamy or sometimes even too expensive.

Farmers Union and Ocean Road taste like watered down Breaka.

Oh yeah Up N Go is ok too sometimes since I semi grew up on it in my household before.

How is Nippy's not on your list? The best flavoured milk, hands down.

    • Agreed! Honeycomb is the best. I'm really eager to try FruChocs.

  • +1

    None.

Hot coffee (milk, no sugar) in the mornings
water / flavoured (no sugar) mineral water in the afternoons
Water, beer or the occasional upngo / Strawberry Quik in the evening

Too much sugar, too expensive, too many other alternatives.

I guess I'm not your target audience ;)

Thanks for commenting as to how not-relevant this question was to you.

      • +1

        No problems!

As part of our research, we're required to conduct an investigation into consumer habits

My answer was 'semi-relevant' as the FMCG client may want to convert people like myself into their target audience. As OP is studying advertising, knowing how to adapt possible consumers to a product is a key factor.

Eg. They may develop/create a marketing campaign that highlights:

        • cheaper
        • bulk buy (longer shelf life)
        • less sugar
        • greater health benefits (eg probiotics)

Advertise as such, and they may convert me.

Here's a product in the making: Turmilk (Turmeric + milk + probiotics). The turmeric (3.2% sugar) will give the milk sweetness, and has health benefits (good for alzheimers, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, good for alzheimers). If anyone makes this, please hire me as a consultant :)

  • It takes only one bad experience with flavoured chocolate milk to turn you off all fast food milk products forever.

I'll blend a banana in water with ice and coconut flakes, sometimes honey if i want anything that resembles a flavoured milk product.

Adversity to all sugar drinks is my consumer group.

  • Michael Jackson = freshly brewed soy bean milk + grass jelly.

  • I'm the lone Big M lover.

  • Completed the survey but I don't drink it often, maybe once a year.

  • I will do your little poll, but honey I get paid to do consumer surveys, and I don't like it when people start giving the (chocolate) milk away for free. Puts me out of business.

  • Oak is the best

  • Kudos to vanilla malt and malt & honey people.

Also I love that price consideration is highest. OP should consider sharing with wider fora.

    • +1

My fave is Just Natural malt and honey, and Nippy's chocolate or honeycomb.

  • Brownes Choc Chill is best.
    Oak would be second.

  • Interesting statistics, 52% of peoples were agex 65-74, and 40 something percent preferred lime as their flavour of choice.

    • +2

You're reading the results wrong mate.
The majority of the respondents are 25-34 and the preferred flavour is iced coffee.

      • That seems a bit more likely. Turns out being colour blind, and reading 9 colour pie charts don't mix

  • Aldi brand, but lately the store has been running out of chocolate and its having a disproportional effect on my mood.

  • Paul's Iced Coffee.

  • Pink Nesquick added to cow’s milk does it for me

  • OAK from the early eighties. They used buttermilk to make the flavouring. Today's stuff is not even comparable.

  • Done.

  • I’ve also completed the survey!

  • Farmers Union Iced Coffee, great stuff always a good buy. I like most of them on the list so was a hard choice.

  • None of the above. I stopped drinking these sorts of drinks years ago when I realised how unhealthy they are. I would even go as far as drinking instant coffee before these drinks!

  • I might be wrong but this could well be highly dependent on the region. I'm fairly sure on the Gold Coast, most people would drink Ice Break.

  • +1

A huge thank you to everybody that's completed the survey and/or the poll so far! There's been some interesting results which will feed in to our research report in the coming days. I'll be starting to analyse the data tomorrow/Friday and will have some interesting stats to share.

  • Harvey Fresh. Best choc milk hands down.

  • Oak Thick Choc Mint FTW
