Mobile plan with Telstra - Internet connection is going worse

Signed up Telstra plan end of last year, tested with Telstra prepaid prior that to test the network in my home/work area
It was great, in fact it was the only provider that has reception (phone + internet) in basement carpark

In recent months, network has gone noticeably worse
Network in car park did not happen anymore

Daily commute to work via train, in my 30 minute train ride to Sydney CBD half of the time I have no internet on my phone
I'd just put down my phone and look at others watching something interesting on their devices… (FOMO here)

Couldnt tolerate anymore, and lodged a complaint with Telstra, appears that the network tower was broken down in my area since half a year ago (alright thanks for being honest)
That explained the carpark issue

But not my train ride issues :(
Curious to know if anyone are experiencing the same?

TLDR: Anyone in Sydney area are experiencing issue with Telstra internet on their mobile device?

  • Tried a new Telstra SIM?

    • -1

didnt know i could do that, thanks

      • I usually have to replace my sim cards every year or 2, they just start getting crapper signal or dropping out.

  • Not in sydney or with telstra but I would not be putting up with that.
Should be able to get out of your contract and hop onto an Optus reseller?
May not work in basement but should be usable on the train… ??

    • im not sure if optus is better but right now im stuck in a contract…

  • Hm, I've been getting the same feeling. I use Telstra for a data-only SIM - it feels like speeds are going down (congestion?) and especially signal is getting worse (running into more 3G-only blackspots).

I'm also pretty sure it worked on the harbour bridge earlier this year, but now doesn't. Odd.

    • yes you know my pain! i felt that signals in cbd are going really bad at peak hours. Perhaps as you said the congestion caused the problem

  • I'm getting a progressively worse experience in Brisbane generally on Telstra. The worst experience I have had on Telstra in many many years. Call failed, no data flow, incoming calls straight to voicemail, SOS only, congestion so bad on 4G that the other side on VoLTE calls say they can't understand me, etc. It is not a band problem as I am using an iPhone X. SIM replacement did not solve problem. Telstra reps are refusing to deal with the problems. Insisting upon stupid handset troubleshooting, despite other devices and SIMs experiencing similar. Unlikely to stay once contract is up.

Even today, in the heart of George Street Brisbane, at about 10am, I was only getting 1mbps down, and 4 mbps up on 4G (two bars).

    • hi5 i'm also on iphone x. The rep in telstra told me the first reason why im experiencing this is because of switching phone from iphone 6s to x. I was lke really that's surprising to me in a sarcastic way and he responded in excitement that yeah it is (totally didnt get my sarcasm) according to him 6s has a better modem for the signal reception…

but yeah have you tried lodging a complaint? at least they might explain if there's issue with their network server

      • It's not a lie at all. Notice that a $200 Android sometimes qualifies for the blue tick but iPhone X didn't. The iPhone 8 did though

        • i understand, and i went to google this after to confirm the telstra's staff statement. But the fact that he said the phone modem is the primary reason just annoyed me…i mean it could be a cause but definitely not the primary one given the network centre is down in my area.
