High School Students - .EDU.AU Address?

To start - I'm not trying to do anything dodgy here.

My daughter is starting at a new school next year and they have a BYOD policy. Looking on the Goodguys site for laptops the Surface laptop page brought up details of a 10% discount for students K-12 etc having a .edu address.

I've checked and her school address is @education.nsw.gov.au not @edu.au.

The Goodguys site also says we can take her student card in which is plan b but that makes it hard to get a Christmas present.

  • perhaps a photocopy or photo would work?

    • Perhaps, but I think they'd probably say they need the original just stop dodgy shit happening.

My experience has been that you can haggle 10% without trying too hard anyway and normally the 10% doesn't apply to 'sale' items.

  • How about a copy of her report ?

Have you tried asking TGG if they’ll accept that email? Otherwise you’ll just have to get a copy of her student card.

  • But it isn't a XMAS gift, it's an item to be utilised for school, so perhaps wait till you get the student card.

    Or, call them and ask.

    • She already has a student card at her current school, and the new laptop will be a Christmas present (and prob birthday as well). Whilst she needs a BYOD it doesn't have to be a $2k one. I'm sure her Dell E7240 will do the job if I chuck a new battery in it.

  • Think I'll contact them and ask. At the end of the day it's not that big of a deal if she knows. I'll have to get her to look at them anyway. She wants a Macbook but I haven't used a Mac since they first came out so it's not my preference.

Let her get what she wants.

Say “you have 2K to spend”. It might be worth waiting till after Xmas for sales. There are always back to Uni sales for Mac and surface usually with a bonus gift. I’m aware she’s in high school but it still applies.

    • I had this same macbook debate with my sister. I haven't got too much experience with them so I wouldn't be able to help her out with it.

In the end, a macbook will (barring extreme circumstances) outlast a windows laptop a few times over. Apple keeps them updated and snappy. My mum's old macbook lasted 9 years and we just replaced it. 9 years and it still got the latest OS update.

They're goo reliables pieces of kit. My surface pro 3 seems to be going pretty well though and I like the surface line. It just hasn't been out long enough to go through the test of time like Apple laptops.

I reckon you could walk into the Good Guys and just straight up ask for 10% off the price and you would get it without mentioning the student discount. I've bought things there that they have discounted without me even asking for it.

  • Does it cost TGG any less if the customer is a student?

  • They talk about a 10% discount. This is probably only really important if the item is on sale. And maybe doesn't apply to sale items as well.
