The markets around Huaqiangbei like SEG Plaza (10 floors) and others are so massive that you can spend days trying to explore it all. Make sure you get a WeChat wallet setup so you can pay with everything by scanning QR codes rather than cash. Even a lot of the street food vendors accept it. Just be sure to haggle.

Pretty much everything you can imagine is available to buy. A much bigger selection than AliExpress. Big brands like Xiaomi can be a real hit and miss with pricing though. Sometimes it's cheaper to buy from the China sites here on OzB rather than the official Mi stores, but if you're after a power bank then the Mi stores are probably the safest. Others in the market would normally try to sell fake.

I've also found that laptops from brands like HP, Lenovo and ASUS are only marginally cheaper than Australia. You'll also lose the AU warranty so don't even bother.

One big thing to avoid is the people who come up to you trying to sell iPhones at low prices. Sometimes they'll be brands like GooPhone who make really convincing clones or they're refurbished phones made from rejected or non-genuine parts. If you ever make your way to Foxconn the surrounding markets are filled with rejected parts. Same with Micro SD cards and USB Flash Drives. Very easily faked while SSDs are far more likely to be genuine.

    • Strange Parts on Youtube has a video on Huaqiangbei where he goes around shopping with Linus for PC parts.

Still, that place looks mighty confusing and I would be certainly be careful not to end up buying 'semi-legit' stuff or getting gouged on computer parts.

      • I watched that last week and I was very disappointed that they actually didn't know what brands to look for. Off the top of my head I'd be looking for Tigo RAM, Segotep case, Yeston video card and a 1STPLAYER PSU.

That's the downside of Huaqiangbei unfortunately. They'll quote really low prices only for you to realise that they mean when you buy in bulk. Usually it's better to go on the higher levels where there are more presentable stores than the small shopfronts below. Normally able to pick up a better bargain with less chance of being ripped off.

    • Thanks. Will setup we chat wallet.

  • Tie your wallet to your belt buckle with fishing line. Thank me later ;)

Put your phone in a tight pocket.

    • I'm interested in any pickpocket tales. It's on my bucket list to see if someone can pickpocket me.

    • when was the last time you were in shenzhen

      • It's okay in the main city areas but the markets and tourist spots have a lot of dodgy people.

Personally, been there twice within the last, 2 years and its been quite safe. Just have to be street smart.

    • Thanks. Didn't think it would be that bad there but will be on guard :)

      • Only in busy places and in tourist spots.

You need a passport to enter the beach if you're a tourist.

save you woes in shopping from the markets and just buy online from aliexpress. you wont need to worry about luggage space and you'll be able to dispute anything defective.

have a safe time and enjoy an extremely busy part of the world.

  • Polystation and gamechild are pretty neat.

Just don't buy memory cards or battery related stuff, all I ended up with was fake but branded stuff, these copy cats are very good!

    • Yeah thought as much. Thanks

    Thanks a lot guys.
Yes is a vague question as I am really unsure what to buy that we couldn't get here easily (of course with a slight Mark up).

I'll have 40kg as flying business, luggage won't be more than 15kg.

I'm leaning towards just visiting the Xiaomi official flagship store to buy things, or at least check it out.

I guess it's more the $1-100 gadgets I'd be inclined to buy.

The electronic markets are always fascinating so will definitely visit.

    • Xiaomi official flagship store is "official"
There are lots of Apple official store which is fake

      • Lol no doubt

  • I'm not a Techo person altho I bought Huawei and External battery the last time.
