How Much I Can Bargain on a Mercedes A200

I am looking to buy.

Any suggestion how much I can bargain from Mercedes sales. They are looking for $64,000. I got down to $56,000, is it a good deal?

Need suggestions for cars and bargain.

  • How do you plan to pay for the car? Cash upfront? Financing?

    • +2

For now i am happy to pay full payment straight…

      • Mercedes finance charge 11 percent intrest..

        • that seems really high? can you haggle it? I paid 6% for my C class.

        • @rave75: which c class you have and how much you paid ???

        • +1

We pay like 3% on MB finance on commercial vehicles. 11% is a joke.

      • Damn son, you are loaded af ! Do you work at the wall street by any chance ?

          Probably Westpac…

This post is stupid. A quick search on Carsales shows a plethora of brand new A250s for less than the OPs target price. A250 is fully loaded, much more powerful and AWD. A much better car. Paying $60k for an A200 is a joke and a suckers game. Realistically, it’s a $40k ish car. There are a huge number of demo KM A200s adervtised in the low $40ks, so you should be able to negotiate a demo into the high 30s. If you want 0kms, you can get brand new ones advertised for $49k driveaway. I wouldn’t pay over $45k though (even that’s too much), because this model is about to be replaced in about a month. I’d wait for the new model, or negotiated a huge discount on the out of date model. Personally, I wouldn’t pay more than 39k for an A200 and $50k for an A250, seeing that the new model is about to land.

    • +5

I am pretty sure OP is talking about the new A200?

      • Its new a200..they are talking about old 200

        • You would be nuts to buy an A200 for $64k. Completey nuts. Its a VW Golf competitor. For $64k you can get a Golf R loaded.

Mercedes market themselves as high end in Australia. In the UK this would compete with a Golf on price. That’s some food for thought. No doubt an A200 is a better car than a VW Golf (a 2.0 TDI is probably the closest competition), but it’s not $20k better. The big difference is the much better interior in the new A class. The other $15k difference? The badge on the front. Is a badge really worth $15k?

        • +1

@Burnertoasty: actually you can’t compare VW & Merc in UK and AU.

Because in UK, your lowest spec A200, is really really low spec. The lowest specs A200 here has more options than the UK version. That’s why they are priced higher then Australian tax adds on top.

I still don’t trust VW after their emission scam though. But that’s just personal opinion.

        • +1

@goraygo: That's the bullshit argument that Mercedes want you to believe. The fact is that the cars are largely identical. In the UK an A200 would be towards the high end of the range, most people would opt for sub 2.0 engines. I'm not comparing specs anyway, because if you were, you'd be comparing prices between the countries, and Australia is going to lose that every time. I'm comparing market position. Mercedes wants you to believe they only make luxury cars. They don't they make a range of cars. Low end cars like this compete directly with cars like the Golf, and in most countries, they are prices accordingly.

        • -1

@Burnertoasty: no it’s not. The B200 in UK doesn’t have GPS, comes with manual, seats aren’t even leather, no LED headlight, etc.

Just god from Merc sets you back for $3k. So it is more expensive.

I agreed that when they import to Oz, we get a price hike but you can’t compare VW with Merc. It’s also different class. ;)

        • @goraygo: No, VW and Merc in this segment are not a different class, it’s the same class. Merc marketing has just got to you. Mercedes do make higher end cars like the S class which VW can’t match, but at this end of the market, it’s the same class. That’s the point. That’s why this car isn’t worth anything like $64k. It’s a price for suckers.

        • @Burnertoasty:

Is a badge really worth $15k?

That depends on how shallow one really is. To me, about $40K is as much as I'd pay for a car, and I don't give a rat's rear about the badge. I'd in fact let 'em engrave a donger on the bonnet if they'd pay me $15K.

      • +3

Then the OP could wait 6 months and buy the new a200 when it's worth $20k less. I have no idea why people choose to buy brand new cars when they can get practically new for significantly less.

        • Pretty sure you’re not going to be able to produce anything to support those those figures…

20k in 6 months?? Then what, 30k In 12 months?? Half it’s value??

          Please…

  • I have good news! You can have a much better car for much less money.

Dude you can get a used a45 with that kind of money..

  • +5

Makes me wonder why would you even pay $56000 for a badge glorified hatchback. You can easily get a compact executive like C-Class, BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 or better still an Infiniti Q50 twin turbo for the same sort of money. Think long and hard unless you need a hatchback and from a prestige badge only.

P.S. Also wondering if it is the all new A-Class or the run out model. If its run out model, $56000 is way too much.

    • C Class all day

  • +1

with the old generation A class, $55k was the the price for A250 with AMG, vision, & command package. Old a200 was$45k with the same option. I am assuming you are after the new A200 with MBUX right? I think you are paying full RRP for that at the moment since it is just released

    • All new 200 with mbux

      • so $56k with which packages? At that price it should have AMG, Vision, communications package at least. Seat comfort & driving assistance are a bonus. If you wait a bit more, should be able to get close to 50k. If putting $50k cash doesn't hurt your cashflow, it is good to pay cash on depreciating asset. Do you work for a company that is part of corporate pricing? You can get 3-year free service.

I've been through this process and compared a few models. Don't make any decision before reading everything that was discussed in the topic I created on Whirlpool (link).
Even if you decide for the A200, you should know your real options and prices.
MP me if you want to discuss the matter.

    shitty car

    • Why?

      • +13

        Poor man's merc.

Those entry models; A180s, BMW 318is, C180s, are just made for people that want the Merc and BMW badge sign, hence why you'd find most of them made in South Africa. German makers found a gap in the market in the Asian marketplace that wanted the luxury brand amongst low-middle income earners.

        • Most C class are made in South Africa and not most of Mercedes. Some of the SUVs are made in US. Please if you can't afford it, doesn't mean it is shit. All A class W176 were made in Germany. Not to mention that the new W177 A class has MBUX system that can only be found in A, CLS, and G at the moment. Maybe OP wants a small car with current infotainment system? It doesn't mean he wants to buy A class because it is the "poor man's merc" as you suggested. Oh, there is no such thing as C180 in C class current generation as well.

          @rave75: excellent reply

          @rave75:

Most C class are made in South Africa and not most of Mercedes. Some of the SUVs are made in US

Yes, most of the lower class models

However, the A series stands a little different as it's the only Hatchback version, so I can give this one a break when I see a girl driving it instead of the over-done Corolla

Oh, there is no such thing as C180 in C class current generation as well.

Yeah I know, I was stating examples of lower-end cars that BMW/Merc made that were not produced in Germany

        • @tderevko:
mmm bit of a marketing spiel to ensure sales continue…

AMG aside, you wont see the upper models such as E400+, S500+ made in SA or USA

        • Quality is where you find it.

Just a few years ago, most of my purchases were made in Germany or some neighbouring country.

I've since dropped the idea that a particular country of manufacture is better or worse.

        • @frostman: A & CLA are Merc entry level and yet they are made in Germany. if by your standard C class is entry level, so it is like you are saying that if anyone wants to buy Merc, they have to buy at least E class then?

        • +2

          @rave75:
" Maybe OP wants a small car with current infotainment system?"

pretty sure OP wants more than that for $60something K's ….

        • @rave75: Some may be, others are made in Hungary. It all depends which line your model is sourced from, often for RHD there are less lines and they are european ones.

Def something to check when buying a car- lines and models vary a lot in terms of reliability

  • no advice to just get a reliable good old toyota camry?

In all seriousness, same advice applies, can you wait til end of the year? Dealers may give you a better deal.

Also find someone who can buy off a Fleet dealer - corporate purchases (university staff etc) have lots of perks - 3 years of service and road side assistance included etc.

I think 10k is about right, I asked the dealer in Perth for a better deal on the C200 W205, the guy laughed at me and said this was not a Toyota. I walked out and had one shipped from the east.

  • Have a look here, new cars every week. If you want a benz that's fine but dont pay dealer price.

  • +1

    entry level benz? ….. why?

you know they have ripped everything out except the shell and badge…

  • Nice car for the city; Aimed at younger tech savvy drivers as an entry level car into the MB range, who MB hope will then upgrade to a C / GLC down the track in their late 30's, the E class in in 40's, and S class down when they reach the pinnacle of luxury ;)

That said, gosh $56K today will be like $25K in four years it is and will be a huge depreciating asset.

You can easily see A200's (four years old) for mid-late $20K's for sale now

    • -2

Haha, interesting comment though I went A170 at 18 then E350 at 23 then GLC350 at 30. Don't quite see an S-class in the cards but would love any 63 AMG when can afford it. G-wagon definitely the big dream.

  • Your Benz will worth next to 0 in the next 5 yrs so think twice before you buy.

You can get an optioned out Golf R for that price, geez.

  • +2

I bought A200 when it was $105.76 per share, now its $103.68. So it's already discounted, buy now!

    https://www.betashares.com.au/a200/

  • Its a lot of money IMO for a base level small car. Nice interior but that's about it.
At least if you got something like an A45, S3 etc they are fun to drive…. but obviously cost a lot more money.

  • When GLS was first released I negotiated about 12% off their first asking price.

  • A lot of trolling so I'll refrain from the obvious jokes, especially ones related to high yield investments.

Legit question: why not cla 200? Surely you're not wanting the A for the extra boot space.

My work car in QLD is a cla250. I wouldn't buy it with my own $ but overall it's OK for its class. Just had the most worrying recall with the airbags, though service was good, had a nice brekky at the dealer while they replaced it.

Edit: should add my brother in law works in Merc sales: 10-15% off is what you'll usually get.

  • I recently got a CLA200 for around 58k and my recommendation is for you to look at the Infiniti especially their recent sales.

Better engine and looks as good if not better than the entry Mercs.
Stay away from Audi, they're truly jacked up prices for not much else. And look at the Kia Stinger very closely. :)

    Good luck

    • You bought a merc but tell people to look somewhere else. Seriously?

      • Buyers remorse?

  • +1

You could get a top of the line new Golf R for this price or less, this would be my pick.

Alternatively why not a second hand A45, RS3 or S3.

Massive depreciation for an entry level car.

Or wait 6-12 months and buy one lightly used for $10-$15k less once it’s not the new hotness.

    • Upvote on the rs3, the power that can come out of that thing is rediculous. My next car.

      • Same - I’m trying to hold off from buying a new Golf R to get an RS3. Such a weapon, then add a tune. Oh and the sound… Lambo like!

        • Im trying to hold out as long as i can to get the facelift cause i want the digital cockpit! But is it really worth the 20k or so extra..

    https://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Mercedes-Benz-A2…

    Offer $45k

Driven 500km…. why would you pay 56 or 64?

    (it isn't mine)

    • That's the old model. Sigh.

      • It doesn't matter. A base model hatch back Mercedes isn't worth more than that.

  • +1

If you must get a Merc, get an ex demo or 1 to 2 year old C class. The quality of materials and manufacture is slightly better. Even got told this by a head mechanic at Merc. If this is the just super seeded A class you are looking at, you will be lucky to get 10k to 14k trade in after 5 years. The extra options you are getting thrown in are worthless to the dealer as a 2nd hand trade in. I'm talking from previous bad experience buying one of the "budget" Mercs.

However 56k really is in normal car territory now. A Ford Ranger Wildtrack is 63K and the majority of their models are between 45k to 55k

Anyway, I'm glad I got out of being loyal to one brand. At that price point you can get the top of the range model (with all latest features and options and better engine) in the more "normal" car brands, than a base model "luxury" brand car.

These days the budget models in the luxury brands depreciate just as fast, if not more, than the normal car brands.

    • "These days the budget models in the luxury brands depreciate just as fast, if not more, than the normal car brands."

      This

have a look look at used euro 1 year old, then subtract from what the dealer is asking. You will lose at least $20-30K in the first year buying a new euro car. So might as well have someone else pay that by buying ex demo or slightly used.

  • I’d shop around to a few MB dealers OP and negotiate hard towards a number closer to 50k. If you get lucky with a dealer towards the end of month 50k should be possible.

  • Get a Robin reliant. Cheaper on tyres .

  • No, it isn’t.

  • With $64K, I rather buy a new Kia,Stinger or a 2nd hand Nissan GTR :)

  • At work parking I got at least 3 CLA200, 1 C200, 1 A1, and m140i.
