  • I got the Nikon D5600 on special for around $750 at JB HIFI and it's great. Depends on what you plan on doing with it most. I used this site to research before I found a deal.

  • $1000 for body + lens? Under what condition are you shooting? How long is "long" video? Is battery life going to be an issue (i.e. are you going to be able to pause to change batteries or will you need AC/USB adapter for powerbanks)? Are you planning on doing post production?

  • Does it have to be a DSLR? There are some good mirrorless options too?

And as above, how long is long? Most cameras can only shoot 30 minute long videos. (You'll need to a firmware hack to remove the software restriction of shooting 30 minute videos.)

    • Hey thanks for commenting do you rate the Lumix G7, I'm trying to find how long you can video for. Looking at 2 hours possibly.

      • It's going to be hard to find a camera that will natively record longer than 30 minutes. The reason is because the EU has a customs duty (of between 5-12%) on video recorders which they classify as a camera that can record video for longer than 30 minutes. So camera manufacturers have software capped their recording capability to 30 minutes to avoid having to raise the price of their cameras. Maybe have a look to see if it's possible to hack the G7 firmware to allow you to do that!

        • Not even these mirrorless cameras?

        • @fruitmansapote: I don't have a G7 so I can't say, but it seems that the 30 minute limit is for PAL only so if you chance to NTSC you might be OK. Also note that you will have to stitch together files anyway since the largest filesize is 4gb (around 7.5-8 minutes at 100mbps 4K).

Bear in mind that a good lens matters as much as the body for good video, so you might need to budget for that. If you are shooting outdoors the slower kit/zooms might be OK but indoors you might want something a lot faster.

        • @Fiximol:

A lens set u would recommend for indoor use? Yeah I've looked at video limit hacks they seem pretty simple.

          Cheers.

        • @fruitmansapote: If you can shoot with primes, then the 25mm f1.7 Panasonic and/or 45mm f1.8 Olympus would be the best value lenses, however the fixed field of view makes it less flexible. Alternatively, you can just use a kit lens and dial up the ISO and live with the noise. The pro level zooms (constant f2.8) are around $700 each so they might not fit your budget.

A third option is to consider the LX100, which has a 24-70mm equiv 1.7-2.8 lens with a m43 sized sensor. It can be had for around $600-650. The sensor is older and lower res (12mp) but 4k footage doesn't use the entire sensor anyway and the pixel sizes are larger so low light is better.

If you are shooting hand held you will probably want to invest in a monopod or a hand held gimbal.

        • @Fiximol:

Would the Olympus E-PL8 Twin lens be a good option?

        • @fruitmansapote: Olympus is not known for having great video; it's more of an "I guess we have to put it in because everyone else has it" kinda thing for them. The E-PL8 shoots only 1080p, and at 26mbps; which is probably worse than any phone that has been released in the past 2-3 years. The G7 will blow it out of the water when it comes to footage. The two lenses are pretty standard kit lenses, which is to say that they are going to be good, but not great. You can definitely get good footage from those lenses, but they are slow lenses so they won't do as great in low light. The 14-42 lens has an electronic zoom which can be a plus for video (unless you need to zoom quickly :p ).

Don't get Olympus or Nikon for video, or even Canon (Canon does kick ass video, but not at this price point. They have a habit of washing down their features for their cheaper level cameras). Stick with Sony or Panasonic.
