Please Suggest Which Sellers You Use for a 6TB NAS HDD.

I'm after 2 for my NAS and the best I've found is $233 each delivered using the ebay 20% off code. For $249 each I can get them from Umart.

Any places I'm missing that I should consider?

Cheers…

Find an external drive that you can shuck the drives from reliably?

eg JB HiFi have 6TB WD Elements drives for $189. I don't know for certain that they are shuckable, but a little research should tell you.

    • I'd get a NAS specific drive as they are more reliable.

      • It's not worth paying extra for a couple of percentage points of better reliability.

        • Yes it is…

Desktop drives have a long recovery procedure for surface defects, which causes them to be flagged as bad prematurely, and the performance tanks with vibration from drives in the same enclosure. Go with NAS specific drives or higher.

      • Basically they are the same drives inside. In this particular one people have found Red and Blue drives. Any difference between the drive you are likely to find and one specially marketed is going to be less than the variability between batches.

Add to that your NAS should have parity and you should have a separate backup too, and the $80 you save is well worth it.

        • In the case of WD Reds versus, say, Greens, they are more or less identical however the extra cost is paying for TLER (time-limited error recovery), greater expected reliability, and an additional year of manufacturers warranty.

        • @apptrack: NAS-specific drives definitely have advantages. But is it $80-$100 worth of advantages?

        • @HighAndDry: I'd say vibration protection alone yes, less headache in the future.
