I'm a Consumerism Addict

I saw this in my calendar today and I thought it was pretty relevant because I'm such a bargain whore.

"Remember, nothing is a bargain if you don't need it."

I really think it's become a problem that I need to address. Thoughts?

On that note, the calendar was discounted to $2 a couple of months ago. Bargain!

  • The natural counter to your quote is, of course:

"But what if I need it later?"

Or at least that's what drives me to buy a lot of things I don't need and never end up needing. shrugs

It comes down to a judgement call, and that depends on how good your judgement is on whether you might actually need something in the future. Everything is also more expensive last minute, or when you can't wait for a sale.

    • True. Then again it turns out I never needed the 10 LED light bulbs I purchased on special or half the other junk I got cheap but never used.

I had a big 60L box of random cables I kept, 'just in case', until one day I decided I didn't need 90% of them. Throwing them out was one of the best decisions I made. Such a relief.

      • Oh yeah it definitely also correlates with a bit of a hoarding mentality for me too - I've done the same thing with old obsolete cables. The trick for me has been to force myself to do regular clean outs. At least hoarding stuff is free…

      • The problem with this is I throw stuff out I thought I would never need, but end up needing.

        • Same. But then I can grab it on eBay for $2 or something.

    • If you buy it at bargain price, worst outcome you sell it for the same amount.

      • I honestly have never gotten the knack of private selling. Or I end up hoarding it under the same 'what if' logic.

We've all been stung by this at least once right?
Remember when the Xiaomi Band 2 was selling for 10usd?
Well turns out 1 year later I really really wanted/needed it, so I just bought the Band 3 for 26usd which isn't really an upgrade from the 2 if you already had one
      ARGH.

but my mi band 2 still in satchel unopened

        • +2

Oh god why have you done this

  • +1

If you are running yourself into debt or are having ethical concerns about how the things you are buying are made or their environmental impact then it might be more serious. Otherwise, have fun with it. I buy random shit all the time & I either find a use, give it away or bin it.

I had a big 60L box of random cables I kept, 'just in case'

Ha. I have that. Old VGA cables and IDE ribbon cables and all that old shit. I should probably ditch them.

    • but what if parallel ports make a comeback?

      • +1

If you ever find yourself in a world where parallel ports are a thing, you should look around for a DeLorean. Think that'd be your only solution.

  • Purchasing things & services is what keeps the economy rolling. Imagine if we all became hermits !

  • Theres more joy in throwing away stuff you dont need or use. That simple joy when something you own has done its run and you resell, recycle, reuse or rubbish.

Its on the other side of the rainbow.

  • Somebody should do a study. Expenditure comparisons between a person who only ever spends money exactly when the item is needed and doesnt wait around for a bargain and pays market price. Versus. The person who buys things whether they need it now or later at a really good price and hoards it - the variable being that the item may never be used otherwise theoretically the second always wins. Im personally the first. I dont spend at all, when I do, its necessity and I just pay what the price is.
