Warranty of External HDD

Hi all,

About 14 months ago I purchased a 1tb external 2.5 inch HDD (non-SSD) to use as a backup. I backed up all my stuff at the time and set it in a drawer. I went to update the backup the other day and found my computer (and others) won't recognise the drive. Using the diskmgmt utility, I can see it, but it is 0% full, i.e. completely wiped. Pretty annoyed that it has failed after about 3 uses. Anyway, long story short, do I have any recourse?

  • I have no receipt
  • I have no box
  • I have the drive and cable in perfect condition (never left house)
  • I may have a bank statement

Can I get warranty ? Is the warranty 2 years using the ACL? Will the warranty work without receipt or box? I have a statement that shows a purchase from office works, but im only 80% that's it. I may have bought it on a cc that I no longer have.

Has anyone used the credit card extended warranty? How does that work?

Thanks,

go into ow and ask them re-print your receipt. Given you have the date, should be simples.
dont need box, just proof of purchase

    • Cheers mate. I might give that a go. Probably worth just asking the question.

  • What brand is the drive?

    • Toshiba

      • Try going here and put in the details https://myapps.taec.toshiba.com/myapps/admin/jsp/webrma/addR…

It looks like you can generate a RMA and send it back to them from that page too. Seagate have the best return process in Australia as it goes back to Sydney and you have a new drive in a week or two. Western Digital make you send it back to Vietnam and it takes forever. Don't ever buy WD drives.

You shouldn't need a receipt. Hard drive manufacturers go by the serial numbers just like Apple.

        • Thanks - it seems it is out of warranty, but the warranty exp. date is 2018-11-26. Not sure that works. Will probably take it OW and see what they say.

        • @andyfc: Good luck. Let us know how you go.

Without a receipt or some proof of purchase, ie a credit card statement, you'll be pushing up hill.

Once you have the above, lodge a warranty claim.

    • Thought as much. Thanks for the reply.

  • 14 months between backups?

    • It is actually the secondary backup - which why im not too stressed about the data. Just annoyed about the longevity.

Most drives will have a date on the device. i have claimed acl on a drive that died within 3 years. claim was made directly with hdd manufacturer - not retailer.

    • What was the length of the warranty advertised on the drive when you bought it?
