  is it cheaper to buy 4x 1080p projectors and make them project 1/4 of the display and you manually align them so you get a 4k output?

    technically you only need 2 to get the same number of pixels and yes, if you have the software to split video real time by pixels and align them up, you theoretically could get the same output. All the best :)

    Sony are the only ones with 'True 4K' resolution projectors on the market.

    Everything else currently uses either XPR (DLP in Viewsonic, Optoma) or pixel shifting chips (Epson & JVC current models) to get an on-screen image of 4k at more reasonable prices.
