Good Place to Purchase Products for Reptiles

Is anyone aware of a good place to purchase Reptile Products, in SE Melbourne, such as:

Heat Lamps;
Light Cages;
Bedding/Substrate;
Decor

We have 18 reptiles at present, and have exhausted most places of their relatively cheap/value for money buys.

  • We always use Amazing Amazon on Springvale Rd Glen Waverley for our Blue Tongues.

    They certainly seem to know their stuff, not sure how they compare price wise.

    • Thanks for the suggestion but we have found them very very expensive (unless they are discounting damaged stock)

      Not so bad for a couple of Reptiles but:
      5 x Albino Darwins;
      2 x Ridge Tailed Monitors;
      1 x Lace Monitor;
      3 x Spotted
      1 x Bredli
      2 x Black Headed
      3 x Bearded Dragon
      1 x Olive

      Take a lot of lighting/UVB etc - even hides and stuff take a lot to furnish

      • Wow! That's an impressive collection :)

        Sorry, I can't offer any other suggestions.

      • Wonderful collection :)

        Unfortunately it’s a pretty niche market.

        Have you tried speaking to the manager/owner of the store(s) and asking what they can do for you ?

        Tell them you are building them a new vivarium and want the best price.

        May I ask do you bread them or just like reptiles ?

        • +1

          No breadcrumbs, maybe battered and fried. :)

        • No breeding yet - there are plan for the future.

          Owners of stores are not helpful - they start super expensive and might drop to expensive - they figure if you are into reptiles they can hold you to ransom.

          The future however holds at least 10 acres of reptile paradise with a B&B attached.

        • @greenpossum: and this is why I need coffee in the morning.

        • @knick007: I need coffee any time. :)

        • @Sainter Dad:

          Well I mean it’s kinda true, you have to be able to afford things to have them. You can’t rely on bargains. Even more so with niche pets.

          You have 18 reptiles which is freaking cool but if you can’t comfortably afford to buy their food and new UV lamps then can you really afford them?

          Just like if you save up all your cash and buy a Ferrari but can’t afford the servicing then you can’t afford the car.

        • @knick007:

          Kind of agree - but ….

          Not my choice to buy them - held to ransom by love!!!!
          My son is the reptile head, so if we can try and save a quid where we can we will.

          We can afford to keep them, but if you had a Ferrari and were looking for say seat covers, would you not ask if someone knew where you could get the same quality cheaper.

          I am not saying that I am cheaping out on the reptiles, just looking to save if I am going to spend the money

        • @Sainter Dad: I think looking for cheapest price is reasonable (and the only sane course of action, honestly) but I think the point is that in a niche market, there isn't enough suppliers, or quantity of product, you'd need to bring prices down.

          Possibly getting them from "super expensive" down to "just expensive" might be the best you could do. =/

          But yeah, seconding that that's a crazy collection!

          @HighAndDry:

          We enjoy them - it is infectious - If you had told me 20 years ago that I would be eating dinner 2 feet from a 7 foot Black Headed Python or a 3 foot Lace Monitor I would have booked you into the loony bin!!!! But now it is just part of our day.

          All praise must go to my wife though - she is an absolute Saint and we 'do it for our child'.

          Years ago we did a poster that says - "In 20 years it wont matter the size of the house or the bank balance - what will matter is that we have impacted even one child life for the better" over a photo of our son - We still live that motto.

      • Olive as in an Olive Python? Bet that's a big boi

        • Yes an Olive Python - and yes she will be a big girl when fully grown

  • I opened up this thread full of fire ready to complain about the usage of crocodile handbags and snake skin shoes but this is the opposite!

    What do you currently house your reptiles in? And how much space do they take up?

    • LOL - Imagine a 9 x 3.5 mtr lounge room - now imagine 3 x 200x200x60 cm racking systems
      Then picture 2 x 120x120x60 tanks with another tank sitting on top of them
      Then add three separate tanks on the other side of the room.

      Then picture a dinner table in the middle of it
      Add a lounge suite

      Thats our life since it is my sons hobby.

      Then think - what more can we add - I know - A crocodile pit!

      2kilowatt of lighting/heating

      Supply of Food

      I need bargains - or donations - lol!

      • I can only imagine the smell of reptile poop.

        • No Real smell of reptile poop - we keep them clean, and the fact that they are in our house means no rodent problems for us or next door

        • @Sainter Dad: The rodent (and small bird and insect and frog etc…) community probably has a bulletin out to avoid your entire postcode haha.

          That's some dedication though.
