Has Anyone Had Experience in Getting Custom in Ear Monitors?

My ears are pretty fussy when it comes to earbuds and IEMs. I had to downgrade from my Hifiman iems to the Apple Earpods as they provided the best fit. After going through multiple cans, my preference for earbuds/IEMs have sadly stayed the same. That is not to say that Earpods are terrible. They are perfect for when I need to stay somewhat alert of my surroundings (eg crossing roads), not needing to take them out when someone is talking (eg when the boss speaks), and being cheap enough that I won't despair if they were lost.

To complement my earpods, I am hoping to get a pair of CIEMs for serious music listening sessions. The biggest advantage they provide is a very good seal. With the better isolation, I would also expect to enjoyably listen at lower volumes. If you have experience in getting CIEMs, I would be thankful if the following questions can be answered:

(1) Did you get your impressions through an audiologist? If so, I would love to hear your experiences. If you had a positive experience and went to someone based in Sydney/Brisbane, please PM their details. I am hoping to seek an audiologist confident enough in their work that they offer redos.
(2) What CIEMs were they? Are you enjoying them? There are so many options like Westone, Shure, Ultimate Ears and Etymotics. I prefer a well-balanced sound signature with clear mids and highs. Any suggestions?
(3) Was it worth it?

Thanks!

not needing to take them out when someone is talking (eg when the boss speaks)

Well, wouldn’t you be a delightful person to have to deal with. Not many things I can think of that would be ruder than trying to talk to someone while they can’t even bother to take their head/earphones out. Bet your boss is thrilled about having to talk to you while you have your EarPods in…

    seek an audiologist

You do know what an audiologist does? My impression was that they helped people with hearing disorders, not experts in crispy clear mid and high sound signature headphones… Most would probably tell you to not seal your ears off and fill them with loud music. But, hey, you’ll probably have your EarPods in and won’t hear them tell you that anyway…

I have a set made that I use while on the motorbike or while at work (I work in very loud environments where I need to have people communicate with me over the noise.) I bought the earphones I liked and got them mounted at a place that does custom ear plugs.

Another thing to search would be a place that does custom musician earphones. Dealing with music, they may be better to talk to that someone that helps old people with hearing aid installs…

    • Hahaha yeah - taking your ear/headphones off is more a matter of manners and courtesy even if it's not necessary. Giving OP the benefit of the doubt though, it'd also be more convenient if you don't miss the first half of the other person's sentence before you realise they're talking to you and take the earbuds out…?

Hey mate, thanks for the reply. First, I’d like to say I’ve got a good boss who I’ve worked for many years. Although it is considered rude to have your earphones in when someone is speaking, he has openly stated to the everyone that he doesn’t care for such norms. In the end what matters is I am able to hear the full question and be able to respond/answer. However I do my part by pressing the space bar when I hear the question asked to give him my undivided attention. Second, I have an issue with your intentions. I am posting this thread to seek help from those experience on this matter and you have made several snark remarks. If there is anything you’d like to correct, it’s possible to convey this message in a less demeaning way. Third, you had the answers but did nothing to answer my questions. You have stated that you have gone through the process of getting customs IEMs but made no effort to provide me with the answers I seeked. Why even comment?

  • You don't go to an audiologist (custom IEMs aren't a medical device) - google "custome in ear monitors" and there are shops that provide the service. I looked into them in the past but they are pricey. Like crazily pricey.

I was considering this for myself back when I had money. Luckily, I still have a couple of bookmarks.

    http://acustoms.com.au/home/audiologist/
Useful info there so you can find an audologist and the IEM's.

    https://thecustomart.com/fibae-1/
This company seemed to be offering affordable but good options for custom IEM's back when I was researching the topic.

Edit: Oops, I almost forgot another bookmark I had in my list. This one seems to offer DIY custom molds.

    • Finally, some relevance. Really appreciate the reply! Never heard of Fibae before. From limited desktop searches, their craftsmanship looks amazing. In the end, it’s all about the sound quality. I am going for a reference type IEM so their flat response is what I’m looking for. Any ideas how they fare against Andromedas?

      • No idea, but there was a list of IEM's that some guy maintained and the Custom Art brand seemed great value for money. I'll see if I still have the bookmark when I get home.

        • @kahn: Thanks for the list. Much appreciated. However it looks outdated and with the exponential growth in the IEM market, there are many options that have been omitted. For instance the Andromedas and MD+ should be on this list.

        • @JuliusSeizure:
Yeah, sorry but they're my old bookmarks. Have you checked out the mass of information on the head-fi forums?

        • @kahn: I have and check this out: https://www.head-fi.org/threads/crinacles-iem-ranking-list-2…

          ;)

It's crazy how the MDR-EX1000 holds its own against newer options.

        • @kahn: Just had a listen to a few IEMs today. I've put an order for two through.
