Is my laptop's behavior normal?

Hi all
I recently purchased (about 5 days ago) a hp 15" laptop 15-db0125au from a store. It has:
AMD quad core Ryzen 2500u processor;
win10, 8gb ram;
128 gb SSD and 1TB hard disk drive.

When I turned it on and began using it, I would notice the fan continuously on. The sound isn't loud or obnoxious, but it can be heard when I carefully listen closely. I haven't installed any major apps, and this even happens in light browsing and even when the system is idle most times.

I called hp support who recommended I update the bios, which I did. They were excellent enough to give follow up calls, and just yesterday, one of their staff suggested I get a replacement evem when I wasn't sure it would be a big deal. I have been given a replacement authorization to take back to the store for replacement

In addition, I would like to also mention that beside the fan "problem", the laptop works fine and the windows is smooth, although I got the "blue screen of death " couple of times, which I guess was as a result of outdated drivers.

My question thus is whether the supposed problem with my laptop is normal with that brand or not. I quite like the laptop, and I don't know if a replacement would make a difference in performance?

    yeah, I'd be happy to swap that.

    Did you want greater performance or did you want the problems fixed?

    • I want the problem fixed

      • Simple then, ask for a replacement. :)

        The same model should not be any difference in performance.

        • Thanks. I will be going to the store today, but decided to seek opinion before I go. The authorization mail also stated I can request an equivalent of the model I purchased, so if it's a problem with the particular brand, I may be requesting a different brand
          Thanks again

    a hp 15" laptop

    big mistake here I'm afraid.

  • Definitely not normal. If you're getting a BSOD so early on there is definitely a fault and I'd return for a replacement.

    HP support for warranty is quite good too. If they say you should replace it then you should.

    What did the store say when you asked them?

    • I posted this question before going to the store. Went to the stire yesterday and I ve been refunded via a gift card.
      Thanks

  • Isn't it only meant to fan if the CPU is getting hot? What does Task Manager say when the fan turns on?

    This happens with my crappy work laptop and wife's 8 year old MBP…

    • Depends.

      Windows 10 recently disabled all advanced power options, you can re-enable them with a regedit value edit.
      My work laptop goes into jet engine mode whenever plugged into power but is absolutely fine on battery.

      Active vs Passive for cooling policy..

    If all the drivers and BIOS are up to date and you get a BSOD, swap it. Sounds like a hardware issue to me. The fan noice might be controlled by a setting in the BIOS, something like always on or silent mode.

    • Was looking at this yesterday - my 15" pavilion has 'Fan always on' enabled by default - when disabled I didn't actually notice anything different

    CPU could be broken from MB or heat sink in the build

    • Take it back to the store. You wouldn't be asking for opinions here if you were 100% happy. Plus HP has also given you an RMA. Therefore they know that model might be a dud batch.

    • Try to see if you can get another HP with an Intel & dedicated GPU combo for the same price. IMO the Intel & GPU combo is better however might be more expensive. See if you can pay a little extra for it and it is within your budget.

    Model number with have "tx" at the end prefix rather than "au" e.g 15-db0125au / 15-db0125tx

    T = Intel CPU
    X = Dedicated GPU

    rather than

    A = AMD
    U = Integrated GPU

    Good luck.

    Cheers

    • Thanks for the suggestion.

    • Suprisingly, I got to one of the stores (Jb hifi) and got the last one clearance of hp 15-cb059tx at $10000.
      Thanks for the help mate

        That's one extremely expensive laptop.

        • I meant $1000. Typo

  • Definitely not normal.

  • Update!

    I went to return back the laptop and was refunded the full amount in a giftcard,so I can take it to any of their chain of outlets to purchase any model of choice.
    Thanks for the help @ everyone

    After searching around many stores. I was able to get a HP Pavilion 15-CB059TX at clearance and bargain sale of $1000. It has the GTX 1050 graphics card, core i7 7700 very strong battery… ssd … etc etc. Really happy to get this considering the previously returned laptop was $855, this felt like a steal.
    Thanks Ozzbargainersss
