[VIC] Red Light Camera Likelihood of Receiving Fine

Hey Guys,

Just yesterday my friend visiting from Overseas whilst driving my car and ran a red arrow at an intersection. She realized she did this and whilst about halfway into the intersection, braked & reversed the car back over the thick white line at the intersection. It was the middle of the day with the sun shining in the rear view mirror. As the passenger I noted a red light camera was at the intersection, but was unsure whether or not it flashed whilst making a right hand turn on the red.

I know there is almost zero hope of contesting a red light camera overall from reading other posts on here and Whirlpool so if received I won't bother to do so. Whilst she has a licence issued from Thailand, I believe from reading the requirements the drivers licence must be translated by an accredited party before she is allowed to drive in Victoria. Stupidly I didn't check this requirement beforehand. If fined, it will cost $403 & unfortunately for me I would at least be assisting to pay for it as that is a substantial amount of money for most who work in Thailand.

My question is that when I nominate her as the driver, will proof of her drivers licence that is in another language be requested or just proof the person is in Australia/exists such as passport and address details in Australia be requested? I can get it translated but likely it will be dated, clearly showing that it was translated after the infringement took place.

For completeness the intersection was Princess Hwy and Huntingdale road. She was making a right hand turn from Princess Hwy onto Huntingdale road in the single right turning lane. It is a four lane road all up (Three straight and the right turning lane she was in). If anyone knows whether this red light camera captures right hand turns on the red it would be good to know. Given the way the flash is angled, it does not even seem to cover the right turning lane at all.

Update: She just showed me her license.. It has both English and Thai language on it.. Therefore there is no need for translation.. I will just nominate her and leave it at that..

A Sheriff and his posse are already heading towards your residence, Sir. Keep me on the line, don't hang up, and I'll call them off as soon as you read me your iTunes codes
My name is John Wilkinson, I'm 100% white american despite my thicc Indian accent

    • Seedy Seed is just scamming you for iTunes cards so he can use them to pay his tax.

The current fine system is a mess and there is a delay by months. Not worth worrying till then. Maybe get copy of her license for your records. You will just need to nominate her as the driver when fine comes. Another posts requesting on how to get away with a fine.

Get your friend to take the hit and you pay the fine. This will keep the points of your licence.

substantial amount of money for most who work in Thailand.

No according to someone I know who visits there regularly. Easily make this on a Saturday night in Pattaya.

    • Most Thais don't work in the red light districts.

    • Maybe if you're a ladyboy..

  • I've read that you can get a $500 fine or so for not having a translated licence (e.g. http://www.bbrvic.com/en/useful-consular-info/driving-in-aus…).

The question is do NAATI accredited translators have to keep evidence and does the government have to prove you didn't have a translation on you at the time that was simply lost and replaced.

Did you pay for her ticket to Australia? Surely if she can't afford that coming here would've been tricky?

As for the translation, she should've gotten an IDP from Thailand.

Just nominate her and see what happens.

Why was she driving instead of you?

  • Visitor from another country driving and you are a passenger in your car? Any reason?

    • ** makes drinky driinky hand gesture *

      • Spot on.. I had too much to drink. She didn't drink at all.

        • Ok but you didn’t answer my other question… If she can afford to travel to Australia, she can afford to pay the $400…

  • right turns on red do get successfully captured on camera, i was hit with that a few years back.
They do however get 2 photos, one of you crossing the line, and another at the other side of the intersection. If your car never made it to the other side there might not be a 2nd photo and maybe you'll not get a ticket.. but who knows.

    • I agreed. I drove pass the line after it turned red and braked after crossing the line. I did not get to the other side. Therefore,I did not receive fine at all. They took 2 photos as he said. Another thing,i do not think u need her license number to nominate her as a driver. Just her name.
