Airlines Rampant Price Gouging for AFL Grand Final

Virgin actually dares to charge 2k for flights leaving Perth on Friday and back on Sunday or Monday. Why isn't there a public backlash on this?

  • What about flights to Perth on Thursday night - might make it a long weekend in Margaret River…

People seem to conflate luxuries with rights. You don't need to fly, and certainly do not need to go to a sporting event. If you can't book ahead or plan around this then I guess it's easy to just point fingers.

  • Everyone wants it - so pay top dollar.

If they were doing this in the fallout from a natural disaster, then sure it would be "unethical".

There isn't a "public backlash" because 99.9% of the public couldn't give a toss.

It is the 0.1% (made up of West Coast fans) you should be mad at.. they are the ones buying the seats at those prices.

If no one bought, the prices would come down. It's called "supply and demand", look it up sometime.

  • What about airlines charging more for travel to Europe in their summer or during school holidays or other holidays?
What about airlines charging more for popular destinations?
What about tradesmen charging more for nights and weekends?

    This whole argument is absurd.

    We're the Eagles
    The West Coast Eagles
    And we hate
    To pay to fly
    Cheap flights to Indo
    Are what we're used to
    How come not Melbourne?
    I ask you why?!

If you support AFL, you can easily afford tickets and the rest of it

It is pretty shit for Eagles fans. I mean they finished above collingwood and also beat them in the first week.

They should be playing in Perth with collingwood fans borrowing from centrelink to head to Perth.

  • It’s the exact same as hotels putting the prices up at peak periods like this? What’s the difference

  • You know it's automated right?

Just tried to book on Ansett and they had nothing available for that route!

    • +1

They're not going to stay in business if they don't get some more capacity going.

    • Try TAA, then.

  • I don't follow AFL but I think the airlines are taking the piss and their rorting and ripping off needs to be stopped.

  • I suspect the number of shareholders wanting higher profits would far outweigh the number of AFL fans who want to buy the tickets (and will probably do so anyway, regardless of how much they whinge)

  • There's only so many seats to sell. Higher price reduces the number of people missing out.

    Drive - 2 days and you're there

Get to see a whole lot of our great country too

A whole lotta sand………….. Not a bad drive, honestly, but a lotta sand haha.

      • +1

Yeah, lot's of sand - and roadkill

But it is still one of the world's most iconic long-distance drives

Fly to Sydney and then onwards to Melbourne missing the expensive flight.

    • -1

Direct flights at low prices are a right not a privilege.

      • What right is that, pray tell?

  • +4

Why not just save that money on travel and other related expenses and watch it for free on TV in the comfort of your home? True ozbarginer style :)

  • Fly to NZ then fly to Melbourne. Then return to Perth via same route. May have just be 1000$ on spot

    • +2

Plenty of people doing this via Singapore and Bali - someone in the office is doing a night in Singapore going over and a night in Bali coming back - cheaper than flying direct and you get some foreign travel and duty free to boot

  • Who would you have regulate this and what would you expect their criteria for doing so be?

  • supply and demand drives prices.

next book flight in advance, and go on a holiday even if your team doesnt make finals

  • It's not really the airlines fault, the AFL should be making the grandfinal more accessible to fans. Especially since they are the ones that decided to lock it in at the MCG for the next 20 years.

  • It a common thing, and people should of been prepared for it and booked a flight to some overseas destination before hand.

Btw you can get flights flying jetstar for from $1,437 return if you don't leave on sunday and just arrive earlier.

If you want the prices to change, move the grand final to perth and watch.

  • They had something like this sale this year - https://www.watoday.com.au/national/western-australia/qantas…

  • It's possible for two Perth based teams to play in the grand final in Melbourne. Now that would be interesting :-)

  • If you depart from Perth by car today, you will still have a good chance to get there by the game.find other 4 travellers and you might be able to drive non-stop.

  • Problem is you can't really book early in case they don't make the grand final. As members you go into a ballot for grand final tickets so you don't even know if you are going to get GF tickets until the prices have already skyrocketed.

Just sad that the AFL has made the experience so unattainable for interstate fans.

  • My old employer had a corporate suite at the MCG. I spent most of the game drinking with my colleagues, because I can't stand AFL. The traffic was horrendous too.

    Just stay home.

The colleagues who actually enjoyed AFL traveled from different states only to find themselves sick from the chicken. It was a disaster of a day.

  • Fly to Adelaide / Sydney and drive it. Or Transit somewhere else first.

  • Some people are very entitled/oblivious to how the world works. "I want to go do my hobby, and lots of other people want to as well. But I want it to be affordable, businesses need to cater to me and everyone else who wants to do it!"

Not sure I understand the logic at all, particularly from the perspective of someone who has done fairly expensive hobbies in the past. You and all the other people interested in the sport aren't special in any way and not sure why you'd expect others to go out of their way to accommodate you.

    • Every AFL fan is a unique and individual snowflake I'll have you know!

  • This trip is an excuse to charter a private plane if ever I've heard one.

    • A lot of that is happening too

  • A simple solution:
    - Boycott AFL Grandfinals (easier for some) and never watch AFL again!
    - Also boycott flights in/out of your city.
    - Uber/Bus/Taxi/hitchhike
    - Boycott your TV

  • You might as well uber back… Hmm maybe they will surge as well.. Greedy corporations.

  • They are selling snow shovels in a snow storm. Nothing to see here people 😊

  • The problem is that supply of aircraft is very fixed. Airlines use price to match supply and demand.
If they could find more aircraft to put on (and landing slots), the price hike would not have to be so bad.

Planes are expensive, compared to running costs, so the airlines try to keep them flying as much as possible.
Its not like buses that sit idle in the terminal, waiting for peak demand.

  • It upsets me too. I wanted to go to a family funeral and couldn't due to a finals game being played in WA during the past few years and the airline ticket prices being so incredibly high.
