Car Rental Full Cover

Who pays for full cover when hiring a car? Think it’s a rip off and it’s only good for traveling long distances, is it really safer just to pay the extra as it’s almost double the price! That’s not really a true Ozbaraginer ain’t it!

It's an insurance policy. Like all insurances, they're a rip off till you really really need them…

  • I pay full cover locally. Internationally I don't as my travel insurance covers the excess :)

full/top cover with nobirds.com.au is totally worth the money.

  • I do not want to read all the terms and conditions, so usually go for the top cover assuming it will save time & hassle in case of an accident/damage.

    • fact: even if you have a full cover and if you hit a stationary object. You still have to pay for the full damage :)

      • that is rubbish claim. are you basing it on personal experience or what?

        • download any PDA from any car rental insurance policy and read it :)

          • @boomramada: Okie, sorry all I have just misread it and its all good, so now its safe to drive in to a pole :)

      • That's nonsense. But there are all uncovered damage - unsealed roads, overhead and under body damage, few others

  • good experience with CARHOOD in Tulla recently - totally fair.

Wouldn't take your recommendation with a 10-foot pole knowing your lack of awareness for something as simple as exchange rates

      • Ouch! Harsh! (but fair haha)

Still I think we can give anecdotes a bit more leeway.

This place is cheaper than what the car rental companies offer - https://tripcover.com.au/

Or just get travel insurance :)

I found that tripcover was cheaper than travel insurance plus covered things like windscreen damage whereas travel insurance didn't - YMMV

Travel Insurance only covers the rental car insurance excess. It isn't actually rental car insurance itself.

        • Correct. Different between /tripcover.com.au/ and Travel Insurance is that, tripcover only cover excess + windscreen but travel insurance cover excess and more but not the windscreen.

  • don't you just get car insurance cover automatically with one of your credit cards?

    • Depends on which cards, my ANZ rewards black covers the car hire excess, but has an excess itself of $350.

      • I would say it covers overseas car rental excess only - may be an idea to call and check.

I thought my CBA Diamond covered car rental excess until I called CBA who put me onto their insurer (Allianz) who told me it was only overseas rental excess that was covered.

        • Oh yes, overseas (I don't travel domestic often), I actually just bought a 3rd party car hire insurance to take the excess to zero. Pretty sure Allianz also underwrites the ANZ one.

        • Depends which cards. Many only cover overseas, but ANZ actually covers domestic too (unless they've changed very recently).

  • Well I paid for the full cover for my 3 days since my main at is on repair, the woman at the counter recommended it.

    • Yeah, you're not really buying anything substantive in most cases with insurance - more risk mitigation and (honestly more important for me) peace of mind. Hard to objectively value the first unless you're an actuary, and pretty impossible for the latter.

  • I didn't pay full cover and hit a roo, cost me $3000.00. I now pay the cover gladly…

  • There’s a good article about all of this

When I was living in the US, my AAA (like NRMA equivalent) comprehensive insurance for my personal car also covered any car rentals as if they were my own car, so I didn't have to pay any extra insurance coverage. It covered Canada too.

I wish Australian insurance companies would catch up to this.

I use a domestic travel insurance policy that covers the excess, but only has an excess of like 300$ itself. Better than the 4000$ rental company excess, and a fraction of the daily rate too.

I'm the same, when traveling in oz, travel insurance covers car rental accident excess, plane tickets if ill, hotel cancellation, public liability, luggage etc.and you can pick your own travel ins. excess. All for the same price ( or close to it) as the car rental companies charge just for accident ins. It's a no brainer I reckon.

  • I got hailed on without insurance and it cost me $5000. I pay full insurance now.

  • I was looking at Hertz in Italy and the cheapy company/economy car for a rental is about $250AUD for a week, but I spotted they have a Land Rover Discovery Sport for $212AUD for the week, same conditions, unlimited kms…has to be a pricing mistake. Though I note that if I added their "super cover" which reduces any excess to $0 then that is an extra 92EUR A DAY! But of course the travel insurance covers most of what that covers (but then again, a lot of car rental companies seem to charge insane surcharges for driving into Italy…so make me scratch my chin a bit).

  • The Checkout (ABC) made a video about car rentals (incl. fees, insurance, etc):

      • The promotion is over, unfortunately I can't help you. Please refrain from making off-topic posts as its against the rules.

  • Just get a travel insurance (domestic or overseas) which cover the level of excess charge by the hire car company should there be any damage. The full cover is a rip off.
