AGL Solar Command and Other Smart Monitoring

I am currently with AGL electricity and am using a service they provide called AGL Solar Command https://command.aglsolar.com.au/#/login which allows to monitor the smart meter where the electricity consumption and solar generation is seen on a graph. It is broken down by time and day, and stores a substantial history. It is a nice tool which allows me to see what is going on with my power consumption and most importantly to utilize my solar panel most efficiently so that the minimum is exported to the grid.

My question is, do other service providers provide this tool as well?

Currently, most providers buy solar energy at a rate significantly lower than the rate we buy energy from them. As such, I no longer have the altruistic urge to run my pool pump in the middle of the night and feed my power into the grid during the day. Economics now dictates that it is best to run all my electrical loads at full power when the sun shines. I was wondering if I move to another supplier, would I still be able to access the data which is generated my by smart meter.

  • Yeah, the Fronius Inverter do the same thing

In regard to the question of Fully Utilizing your Solar Energy production

I would recommend you Installing a Solar Paladin Diverter system to your Hot water tank, if u have one.

See their website for more information

1/3 of my electrical bill involve heating or cooling

    • That's only if it's a fronius inverter, and in which case a smart meter is wired in (otherwise you'll only see production of the solar)

Op could always get a smart meter installed depends your inverter type then it won't matter who you're with for your electricity

      • I have a standard issue smart meter installed (for billing). It's about 2-3 years old. How do I extract the data from it? As a consumer, do I have access to the meter's data?

        • I would imagine that was done by your solar installer and not AGL?
If so, the new provider should be able to see it/ there are apps you can download to view I would think.
Is the solar company still in business that did yours?

        • @timthetoolman: The solar company was Origin energy. They did the basic install under the Kevin Rudd program. My analogue meter was changed a few years later for a smart meter under some mandatory requirement by a 3rd party contractor. I think it was organised by AGL, my service provider.

Not sure what system is used to extract the data remotely from the meters. I will need to read theat up further. I don't think any general app can use the data as the meter is not transmitting on the internet.

Solar Analytics is a very nice product for viewing all consumption, generation and also storage (if you have it) data.

Mojo Power are a small retailer that provide Solar Analytics as part of their service. They are quite innovative and have a totally different pricing strategy to their competitors, depending on how you use your energy you can save a lot of dollars.

    • How much the Solar Analytics ?

    • The Solar analytics looks very similar to the data from the Solar commander site. The dashboard looks almost identical to te agl solar commander site. Any idea how much it costs?

Having Solar Analytics with Mojo cost me nothing extra at all. They installed 4G network smart meters that feed near real time data back so I can view it though Solar Analytics.

It would have cost them a bit of capital up front to change the meters and setup the communications, but I guess they are confident in the quality of their service so they can recoup that cost through customer retention.

They've certainly done what it takes to keep me as a customer, I was attracted by the savings, but it's the really great services that keep me with them.
