Hi Guys, I bought a cheap Padzene Dz09 smart watch for my 6 year old only to find out that I can not use it to make phone calls here in Australia :(. Well silly me, anyway what is done is done. I am not an expert at all with what phone bands are work properly in Australia as you guys can now understand. So can you guys please kindly recommend a cheap smart watch that I can give it to him ? The requirements are

  1. Must have it's own sim card slot so that it can make and receive phone calls here in Austalia
  2. Send and receive SMS
  3. If possible optionally have GPS tracking - this is optional, but if present will be great

Kindly please advise guys.

Thanking you in advance for your valuable recommendations/suggestions

Why don't you just buy your kid a normal cheap android phone like everyone else? Unless he's inspiring to be Maxwell Smart…, I don't get the point of an actual watch phone.

Sending texts sounds like a right pain in the arse via one of those watches…

He has smart phones if he wants, in fact I gave him my Galaxy s6, but he wants a smart watch :(

      • We don't always get what we want. Especially kids.

      • Ok so get him the galaxy watch? Maybe for XMAS?

        • He wants cheap…

          • @CyberMurning: Well he didn’t actually specify a budget.

So during the sales I reckon the galaxy watch could be had for ~$400 maybe less.
            Some would call that cheap.

            It’s retailing for us$330.

@Randxyz123: Hi guys thanks for your advises so far, it is very much appreciated. My budget is anywhere between $20 to $150 for now. If I can see my kid wearing the smart watch responsibly without smasing it in next couple of months, then yes I will get him a full fledged Samsung one for his 7th Birthday.

                @GameBunny: Problems with a 'cheap' smartwatch-phone

                • The good quality ones cost quite a bit of $$, we're talking $300~400 that actually cost nearly as much as mid-range Android.

                • small battery means a short battery life and the requirement to speak out loud to your watch and also lack of an earpiece means that your phone calls are on loudspeaker and everyone hears you talk. This is a problem for any smartwatch phone of any price range..

                • and given your $20 to $150 budget, you will end up spending money on a unknown brand from Aliexpress or Gearbest that has is going to be plagued with reliability issues. It costs a lot of money to engineer a good smartwatch, and these chinese brands are likely going to break after a few months of using them. Not very good return on investment if you spent $100 on a device that only lasts a few months.

TLDR — the cheaper alternative is to just buy a phone that will much likely outlast a smartwatch.

  • Can the Padzene Dz09 smart watch connect to his S6 via Bluetooth and make calls that way?

    • Possibly yes, but ideally he can make a call to me when he is away. Looking at my limited options, may be I will have to look at some second hand alternatives then to fit within my budget for now.
