My computer laptop has gone on the blink and looking at getting a laptop.
Would anyone recommend a sub $500 laptop with 128 gb sdd or ability to upgrade SSD
Help would be appreciated thanks.

Any laptop that has a SATA port and is already running a mechanical drive can be upgraded with / to an SSD.
They are the same form factor.
The only laptops that you cannot upgrade are those cheap ones using eMMC.For that price you can't be using it for much more than a glorified typewriter, maybe grab a Surface Go. It has usb-c you can plug an external drive into.

what's the issue with your current laptop? i.e. is it a problem that can be fixed.
what model + brand is your current laptop?
what do you use a laptop for?
screen size?
what sort of battery life do you require?
is second hand / refurb ok?
