Issues with Automatic eBay Plus Renewal - Previously No Option to 'Cancel Membership' - Now Present after Being Billed

Hi OzB,

Just wanted to see if anyone is having the same issues.

I subscribed to the eBay plus free membership on the 1st of Sept, and it ended yesterday midnight. I knew this was approaching and from the lack of relevant deals on eBay plus I knew I wasn't going to renew i.e. pay the annual fee. Thus I looked on the eBay plus landing page and under the "View Membership" arrow all I saw was "View Invoice" and "Change payment method".

On clicking both of these options the following pages did not have any information on the upcoming payment for the annual subscription, nor did it give me the option to cancel. This is probably where I went wrong, because I assumed if I couldn't cancel it on my end, it wasn't going to automatically resume.

Anyway I woke up this morning and I've been charged $48.99. I went to the eBay plus landing page and under view membership I can now cancel it - from 1 years time. I called eBay plus and after all this discussion etc etc, she was 100% firm that she could not process a refund, and if I couldn't see the option 1 week ago, nor yesterday, I should have called eBay and thus it is my fault/not eBay's that I was billed.

I'm just extremely surprised A) that there was no option at ALL that I could find to stop the recurring billing, and B) that there is no option at ALL (8 hours after I paid and haven't cost eBay anything extra) that a refund cannot be processed. My questions are, what are you opinions on A and B, and has anyone else had this issue? Should I have been more proactive and made the time to call/chat eBay.

Cheers, and thanks for any help.

Grief, you should have just made time to call and cancel in person

  • P.S - if possible could you please select poll option D only if you haven't had an experience detailed in options A, B or C.
    Thanks

    • Was also hooked up and been billed similarly :(

  • You cancel in chat.

They have no obligation to refund.

    • Sorry, I feel like you're not quite addressing the concerns above.
"You cancel in chat" - Are you saying this is the normal method of doing it?
Second, "They have no obligation" - Yes I do feel like I deserve a refund, nonetheless, is it reasonable that there is no possibility of a refund given the circumstances?

        1. It's the method that works. This is the same for a lot of subscriptions.

        2. Ok, great you feel that way. There's a possibility - if they feel like it. That's it.

You can cancel the automatic payment in Paypal too.

    • I tried this - in my paypal centre there was no information regarding the eBay plus payment :(

      • +1
        1. Sign into PayPal
        2. Click gear icon
        3. Click payments tab
        4. Click manage automatic payments
        5. Click the one you want to disallow
        6. Click cancel

Easy done. This is how you should deal with all future "free" trials that involve having to agree to PayPal billing.

        • Shall do. Thanks for the advice

  • Damn…better make use of those member-only deals for the next year then

  • I got ebay plus in the first trial and there was an option in the settings to cancel before the payment

  • Were you able to get a refund? Same thing happened….
