w203 (2003). My god the repair costs!

  • check WP, lots of threads on them. recently saw one about heavy rear break pad wear after a few thousand kms. Apparently it's common? wtf

      Oh wow, def will. thanks.

My biggest worry is buying the entry level of a luxury car manufacturer.

Might be better off buying the absolute luxury model of a Mazda/Honda for example

      • it's definitely better off to go jap in terms of value, but some just likes merc for the badge. If you don't care what others think then consider jap, (lexus?) else keep looking for german and mind the hidden costs.

      • Yeah, Lexus is a good compromise between European badging and Japanese reliability.

        • I need a car to drive to work, but the costs just keep adding up.

Apart from the cost of the vehicle, if I get the C250, I will be paying

          $2,500 fuel
          $1,000 tolls
          $3,500 insurance & rego
          $xx servicing

Or i could suck it up and catch public transport which is capped at $63 per week

          • @bigballerbrand: If your absolute only use for the car is commuting and you have a public transport option…. go the public transport option. I have a car and I still take public transport - commuting has to be the worst form of driving I can think of, and I like driving normally.

          • @bigballerbrand: regardless of whatever vehicle

tolls / rego will be fixed costs
fuel (dependent on fuel consumption but wouldn't vary too much - unless u go with say like a yaris or equiv)

if it's just for an a to b car, there were deals posted here for like brand new corollas for 20k (insurance would be low and u don't have to worry about rego for the first year!)

            • @reno: yeh definitely something to consider. I have my own business but I will be working at the same site for 12 months.

It just feels like a pain having to walk to station, catch a train, then catch a ferry.

But i have been warned of the dangers of driving to work (bumper to bumper etc)

    • Define a few thousand km?

If you drive normally, it will last 50-60,000km.

Cheap used C-class Mercs are popular among certain….. driving crowds. That could explain it.

I believe in Australia Mercedes mechanics rate is $250/hr.

I looked at a Mercedes as one of my options with a new car purchase last year, including a test drive, trade-in valuation, etc.
I was quite excited that we could actually include it in our considerations, as I previously thought that the brand was well out of our league, but prices seemed comparable to other makes.

I was actually disappointed in the end, primarily as it did not offer anything that I couldn't get in another make. I had the feeling that the brand has been devalued, and that seems to be supported by the number of Mercedes on the roads these days. I know in Europe it is very common to see a Mercedes as a taxi, and we are close to that here now.

So, once the status of driving a Mercedes was taken out of the equation, it really became just another (new) car, with very similar features to many others, with a slightly higher price tag.

    • Mercedes and BMW equivalent of Ford and Holden here, but in Australian market luxury car tax is the killer. Not sure why we having it since we don't manufacturer cars here anymore.
If you really after status, you should go for high end models not C200 or C250.
Then again there is more Porsche 4wd than Mercedes with AMG in ACT.

Same reason as always - govt wants money.

Yeah. I think that ties in with the tristar being devalued a bit - most people who know cars/know money, don't really rate C-class (or below…) as 'real' mercs.

        • Haha. Overheard someone at work today excited to buy his/her first Merc A class with 19 gun metal wheel. He/she definitely seem excited.
