How Do I Sell Shares?

My mum bought some shares years ago in my and my brothers names, we're now trying to sell them, but we don't know how to.

I'm familiar with using CMC/Commsec to buy/sell shares, but I don't have any records for these shares, apart from at tax time I get some franking credits

Does anyone know how I should go about selling these?

Edit - Shares are for the 'Australian Foundation'

  • You need to get hold of the Share Certificate, which you should be able to do by approaching the party that sold you the shares in the first place (online share broker or similar).

    • I've got no idea who that is

  • I sold a small quantity last year via: https://www-au.computershare.com/investor/trade

The information is comprehensive but easy to follow.

I didn't have the Share Certificates, just the applicable holding references (which should be on the advices re the dividends).

  • If you google your question, https://www.google.com.au/search?q=How+Do+I+Sell+Shares
Commsec will answer your question and you need to have the Shareholder reference number (SRN).

  • I don't have any of this information - no HIN/SRN, no dividend statements. The only visibility i have is an autofilled line on my tax. I believe the dividends are reinvested, so there's no money that comes out of it

    • Find out who is the share register of your shares. Then contact them.
Most goes through Computershare, they will charge you a fee.

    • I believe the dividends are reinvested

You will need to find out the purchase date and price of original share purchase as well as every dividend reinvestment, to complete capital gains tax.

I suggest you don't sell until you have this information.

  • then youre going to have to go through mail and paperwork associated with the purchasing address and find the mail.

    • Sorry, i don't follow what you mean? The shares were purchase years ago by my mum, she can't find the paperwork. We've moved about 10 times since they were purchased.

AFIC shareholder inquiry line 1300 662 270 (local call)

Call them and ask for help.

    • +2

cheers, that's got the ball rolling!
They got me onto computershare, i worked out what address they're registered at, which is a start. Apparently they can only send the SRN to the address on record, which is a problem, as I've never lived there, my mum did

So I think i have a path forward - i've got to change my address, then get them to send out the SRN

  • Go to the website of the company you have shares in, go to investor section and you will find info about who they use for share registry plus contact details.

  • Assuming you are referring to Australian Foundation Investment Company.

Assuming you are, you will need to contact Computershare per this link … (http://www.afi.com.au/Registry-info-forms-and-explanatory-in…)
