Record Player / Turntable Looking to Buy

So after insisting 2yrs ago we chuck out the old record player, the gf now wants a record player again! Any recommendations? Nothing fancy, just play records and I'll plug it into existing amp.

All I can find is the $70 Thompson player from Aussie post. Anyone seen others?

  • I would definitely not risk damaging my records with a player like that. You're better off buying a second hand Technics direct drive unit or something similar. Avoid the cheapies at all costs, plus they also sound like shit.

    • Ok, cheers. I'm old enough to remember record players (just), but honestly know nothing about them. Not sure what a direct drive is? I;m guessing this refers to the spinning part itself not using a belt/ band to turn the table? Is there different types of needle? quartz off memory?

      • +1

There are different types of needles, though I wouldn't worry about replacing them. The factory installed one is usually good enough. Direct drive basically just means they have no belt, if you're not handy and want something that just plugs straight in then that's probably the way to go, otherwise belt units are fine just keep in mind these players are getting old now so the belts might need replacing. Belt ones are usually much cheaper though.

  • If you're going to have one, you may as well make something worth looking at…

    • Well that's just awesome. If it's 2.49 euros I'll have one. If it's 2490 euros, I'll just admire the concept!

  • Check out JB Hi-Fi, they seem to have a range at reasonable price points.

Buying new ensures that it will have Built-In Phono Preamp, so you can plug into you Amp.

  • Personally I ended up going down the budget avenue of the Audio Technica LP-60 for $160ish a few weeks ago (30% audio sale off then another 5% off with e-gift card). Others will gasp in pure horror at the thought but as someone who will probably only buy a record every other month it suited me fine.

Project Essential II is undoubtedly a better buy depending on how much you'll use it. But you'll

Keep an eye on Facebook Marketplace too, I noticed a few selling entry level models that JB stocked fairly cheap so you may luck out.

    • She ended up getting a Audio Technica AT-LP60 for $245… just saw this…ouch…my Ozbargain hurts!
