I Have an AmEx Card - Should I Cancel It or Worth Keeping?

Hi all,

I have an American Express Credit card. I hardly use it, got it a few years ago as I heard there can be some OzBargain specials that can only be had if you have an AmEx card. I haven't got any deals from it yet so thinking of cancelling the card. My main credit card is the Citibank Signature card.

Should I cancel it? What are the main benefits you have with your AmEx card and how much are those benefits worth?

Thanks!

Yeah, you rely on "heard",not find the deals by yourself.Just cancel it then.

  • Lol everyone on Ozbargain especially in NSW (westfield gift cards) was going nuts over "fashion night" or whatever it was where you got like $20 back on $50 spend. Please do not crucify me on the T&C's, I don't have Amex.

    Ridiculous question.
How about you spend five seconds searching and if deal value > annual fee then keep the card?

I use AMEX extensively. Monitor AMEX connect, use the website or the app to see what offers are available etc. If you are half focused you can save a lot of money on offers like spend $300 at Harvey Norman get $50/$100 or even $150 back depending on the offer. Usually have regular hotel offers to get cashback etc. Points earn is way better than other cards which is best used on business class flights. I find I get a large amount of value on holidays and travel benefits.
But should you keep yours? If you've had it for a while and haven't received any benefit it doesn't sound like you're the sort of person that will make the most of it.

      What card are you using?

I use a variety of cards depending on the shop. This maximises my possible points earn. For example an Edge for shopping and fuel, the charge for travel, accommodation and dining etc.

If it’s free, keep it. If you have to pay an annual fee, cancel it.

Amex Small Shop is coming up again. Why not use it for that? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/405472

    • Great idea, thank you

One benefit of cancelling is so you can wait 18 months to reapply for d sign up points

    • Great idea, thank you. I'll see how I go with the amex small shop and then might cancel it amd reapply if there is a good sign up points offer.

  • Thanks all for your comments and help
