Samsung Galaxy Watch 46mm Extreme Battery Drain Issue. Anyone Else Having Issues?

Recently upgraded to the Samsung Galaxy watch 46mm through a mate's Corporate account from my Gear S3 Frontier which I had running for about 18 months.

Main reason for upgrade was the advertised battery life improvement and advanced fitness tracking as I use it at the gym.

I was easily getting 2-3 days with my S3 Frontier with 2-3 hours of bluetooth connectivity to my phone, mainly to log activities at the gym and change songs instead of reaching for my phone everytime.

I use the watch mainly as a fitness tracker rather than getting notifications. So it is not connected to my phone all the time.

I was hoping to get more out of this new watch, but have been disappointed so far!

  • 9.30pm last night - Fully charged
Wifi OFF, GPS off, AOD off, Continuous heart rate was set to every 10 mins.

  • 6am this morning - battery at 92%

  • 3.30pm now,battery at 66%.

Samsung Gear app shows that Samsung Health has used up over 22% of the battery! Haven't been to the gym yet since morning apart from taking the pup out for a walk for about 20 mins!

Anyone else having similar problems?

  • I was only getting 1-1.5 days of battery life from my 46mm 4G version, then I turned always on screen off, and now it has been 1.5 days, with 1 hour GPS tracking, sleep tracking, and normal use and its still on 66%.

I'm getting annoyed with a bug that keeps turning handwriting typing off.

  • I got a day out of my S3 Frontier, and ill be (profanity) if ill be keeping mine if it lasts any less then 2 days! Samsung will be refunding.

    • Only used to get a day out of my S2, my new 46mm 4G one is doing well now that I've turned off always on screen.

  • My 42mm was woeful the first few days, but seems to have settled now - 82% since I woke up, connected via bluetooth all day.

I had an issue which I think was a Bluetooth bug in Oreo where it constantly disconnects and reconnects, which seemed to be chewing up a lot of the battery.

  • I'm struggling with my 42mm. getting like a day out of it.

guess it's my own fault but went to bed sat night with 50%, woke up 9am and it died on a walk at 2.30pm sunday. that's pretty shit.

charged to 100% last night. today i turned everything off this morning. no wifi. no bluetooth. no gps. never used always on screen anyway. still down to 49%. that's with no connectivity at all. heartrate i think is on still set to periodic.

I'm basically accepting that I'll need to charge every day.

    • Do a factory reset on it. Something is wrong there.

If that does nothing, send it back for warranty fix. Might have a dud battery.

      • think I'll do that tonight. it's really really shit. basically get 1 day out of it. i couldn't safely do 1.5-2hrs of exercise and have faith it'd last me all night.

  • 46mm Bluetooth here

    • Bluetooth always on
    • Location off
    • Always on display off
    • Screen timeout 10 seconds
    • Wake up gesture off
    • Screen brightness 1
    • Night mode from 9pm to 5pm
    • Pushing all notifications over 20 a day
    • Replying to 5 SMS or messenger messages a day
    • Take on average 1 5 minute call every 2 days on it
    • Auto heartrate tracking on

Monday morning from 100% to Thursday morning morning at around 7%.

Currently, last full charge was on Sunday morning. It being Tuesday morning I'm at 57%

The wife has the 42mm. I'll get some stats off of her to share

  • 46mm here, getting about 2.5 days.
heart rate is only when I ask for it.
    no workouts or GPS.

    Still testing it out.
suspect one day use once I have GPS and heart rate on use.

Don't forget to use the battery saver option where it goes to a greyscale screen and limits the functions.

  • I have done a factory reset this morning. Fully charged at 9am. (With a similar set up below, I was getting 2-3 days on my S3 Frontier)

    • Bluetooth ON
    • Location OFF
    • Always on Display OFF
    • Screen brightness 2
    • Night mode from 10pm to 6am
    • Push notifications ON
    • Auto Heart rate tracking OFF (only at request)
    • Screen time out 10 seconds
    • Wont be replying to any msgs on the watch

At the time of posting this, battery is at 99%.

  • 46mm 4G

    *4G Always ON
    *Bluetooth Always ON
    *Always on display OFF
    *Location OFF
    *Screen Brightness 10
    *Screen Timeout 15 SECONDS
    *Push Notifications ON
    *Auto Heart Rate Tracking ON

Since last charge on Sunday morning, I've done about 1 hour of GPS fitness tracking, and I'm on 47% battery remaining.

    • that's not bad! over 2 full days and still at half. Mine died late last night. Wondering if it is faulty battery :/

      • The first couple of days it had crappy battery life, bit over a day. Thought that was with Always on display turned on.

But the 3rd posted in this thread said theirs was bad the first few days too.

        • 2 days 7 hours since last charge, and 25% remaining.

          Top 5 battery usage is:
          13% watch face
          10% Samsung health
          5% notifications
          3% settings
          2% music

  • 9am Tue morning - Factory reset & 100% charge

    9pm Tue night was 82%

    9am Wed morning was 78%

11.40am Wed 76% (much much better than what I was getting in the first 2 days!)

    Samsung Health 25%
    Watch faces 16%
    Galaxy Apps 8%

I have booked a slot at a Samsung Service Centre near by for Sunday arvo to have the watch inspected! Samsung customer service advised that it is reasonable for me to expect 4-5 days from a 7 day advertised battery life for the 46mm bluetooth version!

    • let us know how you go. my 42 mm is basically lasting less than 1.5 days

  • 46mm Bluetooth.

So far with minimal use its doing well.

    Monday 7:00am @ 100%
Friday 1:00am @ 31%, which should last me another 24hrs.

    Usage

    • Watch faces 33%
    • Samsung health 21%
    • Notifications 4%
    • Weather 1%

    Settings

    • Bluetooth Always ON
    • Always on display OFF
    • Location OFF
    • Screen Brightness 2
    • Screen Timeout 30 sec
    • Push Notifications ON
    • Default Samsung Health settings.
    • Night mode usually goes on from around 11pm until 7am
  • Been a complete mess dealing with them! took the watch yest and they didtn have my appointment booked in. Had bought 2 watches, and sending both of them back for a replacement. might take up to 30 days for them to be tested and replaced!!

the 2nd watch which my mate has, struggles to get over 2 days with minimal usage!

  • Update: Both watches have been sent back to a samsung repairer last week and deemed faulty! But Samsung say it might take upto 30 days for the watch to be sent to their warehouse before they can send a bloody replacement!!!!

    What a joke

  • Had a shortish battery life last week when I first grabbed my watch has been pretty good now.

    Galaxy Watch 46mm LTE
    * Been using on Auto low brightness (2/3 otherwise)
    * usually paired via bluetooth
    * turned off always on display (this has made a huge difference)
    * good night mode for 8 hours each night
    * screen timeout 20 seconds
    * location and wifi off
    * LTE set to turn on when watch is not connected by bluetooth
    * Had heart rate continous but I've turned down to the occasional setting part way through

Have got 2 days, 16 hours since last full charge and still on 3% (it says I'll get 2 more hours out of it)

    Usage:
    Watch faces 16%
NBA App 12% (will ditch going forward as I've hardly actually used)
    Samsung Health 10%
