FYI: Windows 10 1809 (17763.1/17763.55)

Just a heads up, I caught Windows auto-updating in this build even with GPO and Registry restrictions.

Not sure if it's to do with the clusterf**k release, but previously, I had to manually open the settings page and check updates before WU would even know to start an update.

edit: I have a feeling servicing stack updates get pushed silently… but I haven't been able to pin point the process that initiates, client or server

  • Cheers. Mine hasn't updated to 1803 yet, I've probably blocked it somewhere. So what's in 1809 that I have to have?

(lols, just checked updates after posting and now it wants to push me to 1803.. :) )

  • my pc would wake itself up to download & install windows update

    • is it windows home? because home edition is malignant

  • What's so bad about the update?

    • muh privacy

    • The original 1809 release had a bug which could result in loss of files from user profiles.

      • "The reason why they lost them had to do with a Windows 10 feature called "Known Folder Redirection" that is supposed to redirect files stored in default Windows 10 folders, such as "Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Screenshots, Videos, Camera Roll, etc." to those same "known folders" on a different drive or on the OneDrive storage service

Users who lost files typically had Known Folder Redirection set up, but the files hadn't been moved

However, when Windows 10 version 1809 was installed on those users' systems, it deleted the known folders containing the actual unmoved files, resulting in data loss for those users."

  • I have updates blocked by Group Policy. However, Windoze will still do updates for emergency purposes. Quotes from off the update page:

** Some settings are managed by your organisation.

** We'll ask you to download updates, except when updates are required to keep Windows running smoothly. In that case, we'll automatically download the updates.
