I thoroughly appreciate all of these watch posts! It's a shame I have an Apple Watch - I can't imagine myself using these watches in replacement. What do others do with smart watches and analogue watches? Do you work on rotation?

    • +7

Thank you yojabbajabba. I have a Fitbit but rarely wear it - it's got more functionality that's for sure however I don't necessarily like the look of it.
Nothing beats a nicely made analogue watch, especially in regards to the engineering that went into it.
I myself am a big fan of Citizen Eco-Drive watches, especially the Satellite Wave collection. The majority of my deal posts are for Citizen watches!
Maybe I should be renamed to CitizenNerd, haha.

      • these are quartz, so digital not analogue?
someone would say that a mechanical watch too.

        • +2

Analogue refers to them having moving hands, rather than LED/LCD number displays. These are solar charged quartz watches, not mechanical.

    • +1

I have a smart watch that was given as a gift… It is still in it's box more than year later. :)

  • +2

Can someone tell me what I should be looking out for when looking for a quality watch? I'm completely clueless when it comes to watches…

    • +9

      quality watch

That's subjective, but for me, a quality watch is a watch that has:

      • A scratch-resistant glass (like Sapphire)
      • A scratch-resistant band/bracelet (like Titanium)
      • A nifty feature like Eco-Drive (charges by light), Kinetic (charges by movement) or GPS (time signals from GPS)
      • A nice look!
      • +1

Thanks MathNerd! This is really helpful

      • Once you start, you'll likely become more picky.
Interesting movement, taper of bracelet, SEL's, day/date presence, complication placement/execution, font style, crown presence…
Like most interests and hobbies, it's a slippery slope. Enjoy!

      • Thought Titanium was prone to scratching?

        • Titanium scratches about the same as steel AFAIK. Steel and titanium have similar strengths, but titanium is much lighter by volume.

  • Damn paid $229 in late August

    • So did I, I bought mine from the same deal. Brilliant price at $229 still, I wouldn't fret :)

  • +1

Oh my. Precisely the watch I was looking / interested at in one of the previous posts here (yours?)

    • Haha, must be! It was the third watch listed in this post that I made on 22 August.

  • Found a nice Edifice watch on Starbuy. Waiting for it to go on sale too

  • The Citizen Eco Drive AW0050-15A is a great buy at $109.

    https://www.starbuy.com.au/citizen-eco-drive-steel-leather-b…

    • A simple, classic watch on a leather band. If that's your style, go for it. It's an absolute bargain.

  • Yo MathNerd,

Above the top left dial in red, is that a power indicator?

    • I don't believe so. From the Calibre H500 manual (linked in the OP), the top left dial is the Chronograph Minute Hand (see diagram on Page 5).

      • Thanks for that. I was just thinking because the red dial on the top of it shows 3 different levels it looks like a battery charge indicator. I have a pulsar that has the exact same thing and when I hold down one of the buttons for a couple of seconds, the little chronograph hand moves to one of the 3 levels to indicate the charge level of the battery. I found it a cool feature.

Similar to the watch pictured here: https://us.firstclasswatches.com/thumbnails/images/products/…

        • Interesting. I think the watch is "racing" inspired (see here), so the dials and their colour scheme are very car-dial oriented. If you look very briefly the dials look like speedometers/tachometers which is what the look is going for, I reckon.

  • I am looking for another automatic. I already own a Seiko SNZF17K1 and love it, does anyone else have any good recommendations sub $750?

    • I'm currently wearing the Cadisen one that someone (probably watchnerd) posted here about 6 months ago. Miyota movement, sapphire glass, 5ATM WR. IIRC it was $50(+-$10).

    • I would save up… maybe around 3k and get something like a Nomos

      • I only spend that kind of cash on camera equipment. :)

    • Thanks for letting us know.

  • Dammit I was hanging for the CA0550-52A to drop in price and I've gone and missed it. Just needed to vent.

    Appreciation for the posts MathNerd.

    • Thanks for the kind words. That's a brilliant timepiece which sold out faster than I anticipated. Let's see if Starbuy are able to bring it back at a future date.

  • My Citizen watch stopped wotking properly after 9 months. I used it almost every day. Isn't supposed to recharge itself by movement and then use the reserved solar battery if it needs to? Is it defective?

    • +1

Citizens are charged by light only (artificial or natural) not by movement. But really even leaving it on a windowsill for an hour or something should be heaps.

      • +1

I think anything except a dark cupboard should be enough. Watches don't need much power.

      • So mine should be defective because i wore it every day and it gets plenty of light.

        • +2

You have only said that you own a Citizen, so not all of them are solar. Might be best to tell us more about the watch, like the model number?

Also if it stopped working after 9 months then it will still be under warranty.

    • One of mine just stopped after my return from a holiday. Tried charging direct sunlight etc but had to return it back to citizen. Took months to get a replacement but was a brand new watch.

    • More info needed. Where did you get it from? What's the model number? It may not be an Eco-Drive, it may just be a battery-powered Quartz watch whose battery was on its last legs.

  • +3

Just got my eco drive chrono from previous deal, stunning watch, this looks sick too… But can't justify 2 watch in less than 30days.
Btw great shop, the shipped fast and perfectly packed.
Thanks to take the time to post the deal

    • +1

But can't justify 2 watch in less than 30days

      Yes you can!

      Quoting PJC here:
By the power vested in me I hereby absolve you of all blame and residual guilt regarding your essential impending purchase of this horological masterpiece.

In other words, buy it. Now. Think later. Like a true OzBargainer.

Btw great shop, the shipped fast and perfectly packed.

Yes, Starbuy is about as great of a shop as you can get when it comes to purchasing watches. Have a look at my post history and you'll see I'm a big fan :)

Thanks to take the time to post the deal

      Cheers, thanks for the appreciation.

  • I'm not sure I'd buy another watch which didn't use sapphire crystal. One of my mineral glass based ecodrives now has a nice scratch across the glass, from a slight graze against the wall.

    • My first Eco-Drive watch (still have it to this day, purchased from Starbuy) has Mineral Glass and got a scratch from a graze against the wall too. Nothing too major, it still looks great!

    • If you're adventurous then you could replace the glass, you could even replace it with sapphire glass. Sapphire crystals start at about $1.50 on ebay (however much you trust them), but you can get them for $20+ dollars from esslinger.

The press to remove and replace them is cheap. Removing the crown and movement might be the hard part.

  • +3

    Great detail OP. Excellent price.

    • +1

      Thanks PJC.

It’s Tamagotchi. Leave it for a day or two and it stops, so it forces you to strap it on even if don’t need to, kind of turns you into its slave.
Now that I got myself a solar watch (same as on MathNerd’s logo, only with a blue dial), I’m free again! Once charged, it keeps time and date for 5 years in complete darkness.

    • Now that I got myself a solar watch (same as on MathNerd’s logo, only with a blue dial)

Are you sure? I don't recall seeing the CC9025 in a blue dial, or do you have a different model?

      • +1

Yes. The model # is CC9025-51l. Not available in Australia though. So ordered from Japan last week, arrived on Monday. Must be one of the last ones as it’s limited series, Citizen made only 250 of those to support their local Hakuto team (lunar program). Twice as expensive and no local warranty, but couldn’t resist the blue/black colour scheme.

        • I just googled that model and WOW, words cannot express my jealousy right now. You are very very lucky.
What was the final AUD price that you got relieved of?

          • +1

@MathNerd: 2.8k minus 10% that Rakuten gave back in points.

            • @sergun: Damn, that's expensive, but a beauty of a purchase. Well done.

  • +1

    nice colour…something different

  • Off-topic but I don't see anymore Skmei bargains

    • +1

Reps won't offer a bargain price anymore. There was never much margin in making them worthy to post on here anyway considering they can be had for around $8 - $10 on eBay. Also gst doesn't help now.

  • Hmmmm so torn trying to decide between this Citizen and This G-Shock I was considering

    • +1

In my personal opinion, that G-Shock looks just a tad bit gaudy.

      • +1

that all G-Shocks look just a tad bit horribly gaudy.

        FTFY

    • Yeah, this one and that G-Shock? You know which one I'd go for. The Citizen, hands down.

      • +1

All right, I'll pull the plug on the Citizen :D

Hopefully G-Shock will go on special or come up with a better price around Christmas.

Thanks for the great post MathNerd

  • -6

Starbuy offers great discount but looking back, how can it be possible? exact same watch for 60% discount? im worried about the quality

    • +6

Absolutely, definitely authentic every time. I have purchased Eco-Drives from them 3 times. Click on Description to see …

      5 Year Citizen (Australia) Warranty

    • +8

About as authentic as you can get. Express Shipped, full 5 Year Citizen Australia Warranty, top of the line customer service.
I've bought a total of 12 watches (I've actually lost count now) from them, and every single purchase has been as good an experience as it could have been.
I have no hesitation in recommending them.

    • +10

      Looking back from when???

      You just joined today, son.

      • +6

        Lol

      • +6

first post as well by the looks of it

    • +2

Jewelry has a horrible markup on it. You'd be an idiot to pay RRP for a watch.

    • +2

Had you looked back, you may have been looking for an " I bought a watch and it wasn't genuine!" surely.
You also wouldn't have found one
What is is about "5 Years manufacturers warranty" don't you understand?

  • +2

Purchased one master Nerd; thanks a lot again for posting this deal. :-D

    • Well done. You'll enjoy this watch. I know I definitely enjoy my one!

    • +2

By the power vested in me it is my solemn duty to hereby absolve you of all blame and any residual guilt concerning the essential acquisition of this premium exquisite horological masterpiece.

      • +2

[bows down in absolute, and complete reverence]

  • Any idea how much the cheapest one with Eco-Drive and Satelite Function Cost?

    • +1

A previous post of mine had great bargains. Keep an eye out for future bargains on those watches.

      • Thanks for that @MathNerd, I had a look and Citizen Eco-Drive Satellite Wave CC9025-51E looks great! Any idea when that’s going on sale again?

        • Citizen Eco-Drive Satellite Wave CC9025-51E looks great

          It certainly does :)

Unfortunately I don't know when it's next going to be on sale, however it's currently only $100 more than the price I posted it at. I'd say go for it now, you won't regret it :)

  • +2

You're making it very hard to save for some smashed avo!

    M u s t R e s i s t

    (But likely won't succeed)

That's a very nice watch Mr MathNerd. Excellent post.

    • +3

      Failed.

      Failed to resist.

No smashed avo for me then …

      Thanks, MathNerd!
