Cheap Places to Use for Asbestos Testing

Anyone know of any good ones? Looking for one of those joints that take it via post, although if there are any labs in Melbourne that are appreciably cheaper I'd be willing to make the trip. I have a few samples I want tested, maybe 5 or so.

They charge $44/sample, to save a click.

$110 for a collection kit and testing of one sample, $44 for additional samples.

        • kinda kills it, doesn't it

    • Thanks, that is a pretty good rate. Have you used them personally?

      • Have you tried burning some?

Use a large controlled flame, ie on an LPG barbecue- so you can be outside and take appropriate care to avoid any fumes.

Top of the blue flame is hottest IIRC, see where in the flame it burns. That will give you an idea of what it is. Asbestos will not twist or melt, it can only go black or burn at extremely high temperatures that nothing else will stand

  • I've used Clearsafe before, they charge $66 and it takes 5 business days or you can pay $99 for same business day.

  • Would be cheaper to find someone that sells it online, and ask them to send you some various samples to compare

    • Where are you gonna buy asbestos online?

I'll break some off my house and sell you some.

      • All over the world bro

India, Russia, all throughout SE Asia, PNG, all poor islands, the list goes on…

        Eg.

As a rule of thumb, if big tobacco advertises in a region, they will have trouble limiting the use of the most efficient building materials too.

The dangers of asbestos materials is partly propoganda, but that does not mean it is not deadly when misused, abused or treated without due care. Which it inevitably is at some point, therein being the problem. http://acpma.in/acp/?page_id=396

        • Not sure I'd be trusting information from a website promoting asbestos products. Go to a pro-lead website and I'm sure they'd tell you the risk is overblown, and that the drop in violent crime after it was removed from petrol is just a coincidence.

As a rule, I tend not to trust the opinions of those who promote things they themselves would never use, and I don't see a lot of asbestos being used inside mansions. India, Russia, Asia… all countries where they don't give two shits about the poor

@outlander: Read the Russian websites of you really want to be scared!- about asbestos mining towns (eg Abest) where everyone is so healthy and sporting!

The reality is we used to think it was okay, and the hysteria over it is now overblown. None of that means making houses out of it wasn't/isn't stupid. But as only freed fibres kill, and practically every other product we use can be poisonous and hazardous in some way or another, esp. cheap, long-lasting ones that have useful properties.

Maybe not the best area to be cutting costs on..

Why, because paying more always guarantees a better result? pffft

  • I have some asbestos sheets in the backyard. You're welcome to test them if you like.

  • Take a few good quality images and link them.

  • With the amount of people here willing to do home reno works themselves to save money, I'm surprised this question doesn't come up more often.
Asbestos is a very nasty material, and its hidden in all sorts of common building materials. You drill into the wrong thing, breath some of the dust, and part of your lung capacity is gone. Forever.

They gave a verbal asbestos test for free, if you want a report there is a charge.
I sent via post last time and took about a week to get an answer.

Thanks. I ended up choosing them. I sent three samples and ended up paying $55, and its taken a week but I've got the results back. They emailed me a report with a y/n confirmation. It was very professionally done

      • Do you know what methods they used to test the asbestos? i.e visual or actual lab testing? As the local place I've contacted said they do a visual test where an experienced asbestos remover views and decides whether the sample contains asbestos or not and this this method was (obviously) not conclusive. Having it lab tested through them was three times the price!

        • I don't know what they do, but I sent them three samples in the mail, and they sent me an email a week later with the results.
The results more or less correlated with what I expected.

My unsupported assumption is that they look at it under a microscope for signs of asbestos fibers.
