Roku Player/TV Plays "Video File, but No Sound? Blu-Ray

Hi,

I have a new 60" LCD HD 4K TV.

I can play most video files through the ROKU fine, however lately I've downloaded higher quality files(16-17GB) and it plays the video but no sound.

I have no sound bar, or surround sound and I assume it has something to do with the audio within the file?

Most these files are labelled with UHD BLUERAY, DTS, MA.7.1

Basically is there anyway I can fix this, or i'm stuck on lower quality files?

Thank you

  • Can you player and hear with VLC player

    • Yup

  • +1

You will have to encode the audio to something else as Roku Ultra cannot decode DTS Audio according to a quick google.

    • How do I encode?
The TV media player is bad, lucky Roku actually plays the files and it does OK other than these higher quality video files.

      • Use a program like staxrip and encode ONLY the audio.

        • I'll Google it and look into it!

Sounds like alot of effort for every file, but we'll see.

          Thank you

  • Yes, it plays fine on my laptop.

  • I use serviio and stream straight to the smart TV but never used that large a file not sure how it would go.
    http://serviio.org/

    • It's like using a screen mirror?

I do that with my tablet, issue is my laptop is in the other room so that would be annoying unless I unplug it and move it over everytime!

I wish they'd do high quality videos without this high quality audio!

      I'll look into it.

  • As long as the TV and PC are connected to the same network and windows is set to share it will work.
Just allocate a movie folder in libraries (the same folder you download the movie) to Serviio and the tv will read that folder.

  • I use Plex, not Serviio

Displays all your media nicely with covers etc. Will auto-decode those files on the fly, allowing you to keep them without editing them.

Put the program and server on your pc and stream to the tv (should have a plex app available), or use a Chromecast.

  • Oh and can I suggest investing in home audio, if you have a 60" 4k TV…

  • But if I use one of these programs, can I control it with my ROKU remote or I have to use my laptop?

I was waiting for Christmas for a special on a soundbar, unsure if that fixes the issue tho.
