NVIDIA Shield TV Power Input

Hi,

Does anyone know what kind of power input the NVIDIA Shield TV (2017) uses? From the photos it looks like it might be USB-C? But i can't find any info so suspect it may be proprietary :(

I have the old 2015 version, and wanted something portable for traveling and the 2017 version looks way smaller.

Ideally I would be able to connect it with a standard (e.g. USB-C, micro USB) power input as I would like to avoid having to take a dedicated charger travelling…

Thanks in advance!

  • It's not USB C. It's a propriety connector. But the power pack it comes with has removable/switchable prongs for travelling from memory.

    • Thanks very much!

hmm that's a bummer… do you know of an Android TV box that has a standard USB power input? Just looked at the new Mi Box S, proprietary too :(

  • What are your requirements? If a Fire TV stick would meet them, it's extremely portable and is powered via micro-usb.

    • Thanks!

I was looking at that, plus roku, chromecast, etc. just to be sure, but fairly sure my original requirement for Android TV is correct.

I would like Android TV as I:
      1) NEED to easily play back local content (i.e. not just streaming from the internet), so the ability to install apps like VLC, etc. which support heaps of file types/codecs is super handy
      2) NEED chromecast support (lots of google devices: android phones, chrome OS detachable, etc.)
      3) WANT extensive app ecosystem
      4) WANT google play music support
      5) WANT google assistant support

      • It'll run (sideloaded) Kodi, and I read that it works well with Plex, but you'd want to research that further. I don't know about the newest firmware version on the stick, but on the fire it doesn't want to load ANYTHING without an internet connection. I've worked around this (have Kodi set to autostart on boot, so if it lost internet connection while outside of Kodi, a reboot would fix this).

There's also apps that give it Chromecast support, though not supported and would likely need to be sideloaded.

In short, I'd put the Fire TV stick toward the bottom of your list since it really doesn't have the google support built-in, nor is it made with local content in mind. Yet it's also at the top of the list since it is extremely portable and can be used with any decent usb charger (powering from a TV might be iffy, but any decent ~1amp usb charger should do the trick).

  • Considering your needs I'd recommend an android phone that supports hdmi out over usb-c while travelling with a good size micro-sd card or onboard storage. Then an nvidia shield or chromecast ultra for home.

Alternatively just pack the shield and power pack. It's big but not stupid big.

  • I wanted something similar to you, a travel box. i have the nvidia shield at home, but for travel i bought a mi home. its alot smaller than the shield:

for power you can get this too so it plugs into usb:

also has a usb port on the back, which goes nicely with this:

really happy with this setup, only thing is to not forget the remote!

    • huh! I looked at the Mi box but ruled it out for also having a non USB charger…

      hadn't thought of that! thanks!

I've never seen one of those before though, just wondering if it's safe to use? Like one of those power ports can take all kinds of different voltage/current combinations that aren't necessarily compatible with USB?

      Thanks for all your links/info!

      • ive been using it for the past 6ish months with no issues. i got it from a recommendation from someone on here too. the mi box seems to be not too picky with minimum power too as ive used it off a tv power usb port.
