Block YouTube Ads on TV

Hi all
Ads on YouTube app on my tv have become very frequent. Did some research and apparently pi hole doesn't block YouTube ads by default. Was thinking about buying a pi and trying to block ads through the network myself. Has anyone got this working with blocked YouTube ads?
Cheers

  • Pihole doesn't work, unfortunately. I have one set up and still get the ads. Even with over 1m blocked domains.

    • Crud. I guess the only solution is another app or running Firefox with adblock. Thanks

    • cheers checking it out now

    • Stuck on the install permission part. I think i need root or something

      • What does it say?

        • Asks for permission. Options are allow and cancel, but pushing the allow button does nothing. Yes i have enabled loading from untrusted sources

  • If your running Android supposedly Youtube Vanced blocks ads however I have been unable to get it to install on my Android device.

    • Yea it's an android sony tv. Might be tricky

  • Pay for YouTube Red (or watch free to air). Don't be a fraud. Video hosting isnt cheap.

  • You can use a DNS service that blocks the ADs but I'm unsure of data privacy as you are using someone else service. Ideally, if your TV supports it you can just edit the DNS of that device, instead of your whole network.

Actually, pay for Google Play Music and get YouTube Premium for free.

That's the way youtuber earn their $$ by shoving you adverts (as little or as many as they can) to their viewers unfortunately. YouTube doesn't control that but rather individuals who posted their videos and you watch it. Tried many methods but failed. Like Decryption said you either pay YouTube Premium or look for other Youtuber yet to sell adverts in their videos. Other forums I read previously had suggested "thumbs down" every videos came with adverts you watched to discourage them (Youtuber) selling you more adverts in their videos.

  • I dont think youtube ads can be blocked anymore. Apparently the domain points to (or looks like it originates from) youtube itself and as such the blocker cant differentiate between the actual youtube video and the ad.

Can't firefox extensions and hacked apps still do it?

      • I meant it w.r.t the youtube app itself or even via google chrome. Other browsers and standalone apps can still do it but when using a "google-owned app" it doesn't look like it can be done easily

        • Ok so via native app on tv is no go. Thanks

    • If you use browser extensions to block then no problem blocking ads. I use adblocker on my browsers and never have to watch a single advert in both Mac and pc. Using network blocked or dns approach on the other hand is ineffective because these methods can't differentiate ads and actual content videos coming from the same source
