4G Data Sim with 4G Wi-Fi Modem Used for Home Internet Vs Conventional ADSL2+/Cable/NBN

Hi Guys

Optus is offering a 60$ Data Sim plan with 200GB Data per month (12 months contract), which is plenty for my family

Is it better to have a 4G wifi modem with plan mentioned above, compared to having a conventional cable or ADSL2+ plan for home which will cost similar or more.

What are the pro's and con's of each

I believe 4G will be faster and can be taken anywhere, but does it have any shortfalls compared to conventional home internet ?

Please suggest

Thanks

Depends on the area you are in, I just recently did the switch from ADSL2+ to 4G and yes performance is drastically different. On ADSL2+ i was getting 1-4 MBs download and on 4G 50-90MB download. I am on Jeenee which uses Optus.

Do look into the following though:
Speed of 4G on optus on your phone ?
    Data requirement?
    Modem/router, I am using the Optus E5186

    • Thanks. I will do an indoor speed test to check indoor 4G connection quality. Does Optus E5186 have external antenna or is it cheap to buy one ?

      • it has two inbuilt antenna and two connection points to connect to two additional antennas.
External antenna set up cost depends on how extensive you want. I am currently looking at a setup around $200.

As above. It really depends on the area in which you are in on how 4g will peform.
Generally speaking, fixed line has better ping rates for online gaming - not sure how this applies with ADSL+2 vs 4g at drastic speeds.

4g LTE modems are generally more expensive - good thing is that there is plenty of used E5186 modems on ebay.

The Optus plan you link has Data pool which will change the way you use your mobile if you're with Optus…

  • My main issue with going 4g only is that plenty of devices/apps assume wifi=unlimited data so you might be in for a shock when your dropbox/icloud/os/game console updates automatically and chews through 10gb+ without you even knowing.

    • Settings manual update only.
Takes some time but worth it in my opinion if you have bad ADSL.

  • does it have any shortfalls compared to conventional home internet?

If you are an assistant treasurer, it can be quite the opposite - you can make some 38K extra income per annum.

  • 200GB Data per month

The industry standard is for isp to count downloads and upload. Upload could be anything from 10% to 20% or even more.
