Best Laptop for Multitasking

Hi Everyone.

I am looking at getting two new PC laptops for my home business office. (One for me and one for the wife) With our work we have a lot of things going at once. Usually chrome has about 20 tabs with different web apps and websites. Outlook for busy business emails and usually MS excel and other office apps, a photo processing app (not photoshop) as well as constantly running and syncing in the background Lastpass, Dropbox and anti-virus, etc, etc

Speed and efficiency is most important to us so I am guessing a fast multi-threading CPU is important, lots of ram (16gb)? and SSD (256gb as most files are stored on the cloud or NAS) are most important. I good quality HD screen is also important as well. I'm guessing GPU is less important as it wont be used for gaming.
Minimum screen size of 15.6'' and 17.3' (for mine) would be ideal.

Can anyone recommend a good laptop that would tick these specs between 1to 1.5K? It doesn't need to be a business grade laptop. I have had good experiences with ASUS laptops in the past so a bit of a fan of them, but will consider any reliable brand.

Thank you for any help.

  • DELL XPS - if you need portability, otherwiseDELL lattitude (though their screens are shit)?
    HP Spectre i5?
    Apple Macbook Pro i5?

IMHO you would get better performance if you could stretch yourself to 2-2.5k.

    cheers

    • Latitude screens are fine if you get 1080p IPS, or really bad otherwise.

  • Dell XPS 13 or the HP Spectre are great for what you want, but I think is a bit higher than your budget

Lenovo ThinkPad T series (make sure its the T5xx) would likely fit your purposes pretty well.

You can customise, so just make sure the screen is 1080p, 16 gb of RAM and whatever else you want there.

Keyboard layout is iffy, but the keyboard itself is excellent. And if you're using a laptop alot, you want the keys to be great.

I was in a similar position not too long ago.

If you don't need mobility, don't get a laptop. The value just isn't there.

What I did was is, we got 2 desktops at a price of 1 good laptop and a bit. As for mobility, we use an old laptop when we are on the go.

What we ended up for the price of 1 laptop: 2 desktop computers and 4 monitors. You dont realise how much more productive you can be with 2 monitors.

There are plenty of deals around if you don't want to build one yourself. Just chuck in some extra ram and an SSD and you are set.

    • This I would agree with for sure.

  • Thank you for everyone's replies and help so far.

The desks we work at are not very big so a desktop PC is out of the question and we have both gotten used to Laptops. We also have an 8 month old baby so want to minimise cables and other things little ones can pull out or over.

Which ones of these two would people recommend?

    This HP ProBook 470 17.3'' with i5-8250U :
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HP-Probook-450-G5-15-6-FHD-Intel…

    or this Asus X705UA-GC452T 17.3'' with i7-8550U
    https://www.amazon.com.au/ASUS-Vivobook-X705UA-GC452T-Entert…

Both are around the same price, the Asus has a better cpu but no dedicated graphics card.
    Thanks for your advice.
