Fees involved in buying a demo car

if the vehicle is registered with a plate, should i expect to pay transfer fees? or any other tax-related fee?

The seller should be able to give you a total drive away price inclusive of any transfer fees etc. Ask them what the price is

    • Agree. My demo car was at a driveaway price.

      How many KM's?

  • I bought a demo vehicle in January. I just told them what I was willing to pay for the car (about $1700 less or so of the advertised price) and ended negotiating the car for $1500 or so less than advertised price. Just make sure that when you make an offer, it is a drive away offer. Salesman is going to go back and forth with counter offers which you are free to accept or not. That way you don't worry about fees and so.

how many km was on your demo? $1500 doesn't sound like much to me, maybe the offer was good enough. I am going to try offering 20% off their asking price

      • +3

        20%?! You're having a laugh aren't you?

        • negotiation*

          • @[Deactivated]: That's not negotiation. Negotiation starts with a realistic figure. Start too low, and the dealer won't even counter because you'll be too far away.

@spackbace: Get 20% off all cars using eBay code “CARZ20”

I suppose that’s better than the gumtree wnkers that try the 80% off code when they SMS you their offers… :D

              • @pegaxs: That code doesn't start with P, invalid

            • @spackbace: there are many ways to lay down numbers in negotiation. i agree, it will be foolish to say your budget is only 80% of the listed price, but there are many ways to convince a seller/sales rep you have a genuine interest + negotiating hard + without offending him.

              • +1

@[Deactivated]: You think I haven't encountered every type of negotiator, that you bring something new? 😂

                • -1

                  @spackbace: oh, you have seen it all…sorry I don't envy your life…

      • +1

3000 kms. Advertised offer was well below a new car's price. Drive away price for new car is $23.000 with no negotiation. Car was advertised for $18.500.

        • So OP would start at $14,800 as an offer on that car… 😂 A good $1000 less than where you did

          • @spackbace: see, I did ask how many kms in on the clock. you know nothing about the conditions of the vehicle i was talking about. there are dealers try to sell demo as used, and some try to sell 5000km+ as demo. no point to keep attacking me on a number without knowing the scenario.

            • @[Deactivated]: I refer to a demo as a demo, under 5,000kms and sold by a new car department where you'll be the first owner in the book. The advertised price is already reduced, and won't be new car price.

I have a go at you because I know the industry and general margins and 20% is ridiculous. I'm trying to educate you so you don't get laughed out the building.

              • @spackbace: appreciate the feedback.i certainly didn't prepare an 80% budget for the listing price. i did lay down a number here without giving you the full story, as i said,i think there are many different scenarios. certainly, there are sales rep had to deal with time wasters.

I hoped to get 10% off a demo and learnt that was being abit too optimistic

      • +1

Lol. Yeah they'll just move straight to the next customer.

  • how many km was on your demo? $1500 doesn't sound like much to me, maybe the offer was good enough. I am going to try offering 20% off their asking price

  • +1

If you offer 20% off you will be laughed out the door. After the salesperson rolls his eyes and thanks you for wasting his time. That's a ridiculous discount to expect on a car, be it new/demo/used

    • +1

Yes because it takes soooooo much time to counter with their own offer, they'd rather not make a sale at all.

      • To counter, you need to be somewhat in the ballpark. I wouldn't even put an offer like that in writing because I'd know it would be instant rejection, I'd be asking them to come up before presenting the offer to the boss.

        • +1

So, the sales person just counters what they feel is a more reasonable offer.

          It's not hard.

          • @[Deactivated]: They don't counter, they get the buyer to lift their initial offer.

So it's pointless offering too low because it won't be presented, it won't be considered.

      • +1

No, if OP is starting at 20% off, there's a good enough chance they'll never get to a reasonable price at all and it'll just be a waste of the salesperson's time.

        • The worst thing that will happen is they'll say no.

          • @[Deactivated]: Yes, but OP might have been able to get a "yes" to around 5-10% off.

            • @HighAndDry: Which I'm sure they'll get to after they low ball it first.

              • +1

@[Deactivated]: Again, unless the salesperson has another customer and tells OP to just go pound sand. 20% is so unreasonable you're basically telling OP to make faces at the salesperson - wastes an equal amount of time, is equally ridiculous, and will have the exact same effect (i.e. nothing but make OP look silly).

                • +1

@HighAndDry: Big deal, so they say no.

                  • -1

@[Deactivated]: Will you accept this offer?
                    No, not even close
                    OK bye

So… The point of that was what exactly? You're there to buy a car, not have a conversation 😂

                    • +1

@spackbace: Alright people, close down the site! The era of bargaining and haggling is over because someone tried to low ball a sales person and they said no.

    • +1

They will on the inside want to tell the OP to F Off.

However their training and professionalism will prevent this as they will know how to handle dreamers and tyre kickers.

    • +1

When I was selling cars and dealing with time wasters like this, I would say, “sounds like a solid offer, let me go run it past the boss” and I would walk off leaving them sitting there while I served other customers or went on break… :D

    • Deleted because i know i will get into an argument with so called experts and do not wan't to give out the information to prove i am right.

  • +1

Nope its drive away unless buying interstate.

For reference, ex demo and is last year model, 20% is not unreasonable for ex demo. It depends on the car,if it a popular car, eg toyota, mazda, forget it but other makes its can go either way.

I was able to bargain down a $57K car down to $43k with less than 5000km on the clock, it was last year model Subaru Levorg STI but current one was exactly the same.

  • OP didn't last long

      "I'll teach'em… I win if I disable my account!"

The problem is, their username now more aptly describes their attitude… I really want them to come back with a new account called "sassmouth"

      • Haha that would actually be perfect
