Dell Inspiron 15 7000 ram upgrade

Hi guys,

I've just bought the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 and want to upgrade the ram. Looking at chucking a 16gb stick and want to keep the existing 8gb, will this be ok? Any serious cons?

I want to keep my options for later down the track, if and when 32gb is required for future I won't be required to replace both modules.

Cheers

I reckon by the time 32GB becomes the standard, the rest of your laptop hardware will be obsolete.
Whenever I game, I hardly ever use over 8GB.

provided that there is a spare RAM slot you will be fine. Using unmatched pairs will leave them running in single channel mode, but you will have 24GB of RAM available at the speed of the lower rated stick of RAM. Whilst not ideal, there shouldn't be any major issues with stability. However, I would stick to an extra 8GB (16 total) unless I really needed the extra RAM, this will allow for dual channel.

  • No real serious cons - it just won't run in dual channel and will be limited by the slower stick. But really the biggest issue is that with RAM being so expensive, unless you really need more than 16GB of RAM, you're going to be spending more on a 16GB stick than just another 8GB stick. And by the time you need 32GB of RAM, you should probably be changing your laptop instead.

  • Thanks for the input guys. You guys are probably right regarding the requirements of the 32gb, I'll just get an extra 8gb. Was hoping the 20% off futu will give me a reason to buy but it's the same as going to msy so i'll probably do that.

    Cheers
