New Undisclosed Kogan Mobile SIM Receiving Spam SMS

Recently purchased and activated a new Kogan Mobile SIM on their EXTRA LARGE plan. I never disclosed the number and only made phone calls between family members. Now I keep receiving spam text msgs on this number, from Dominoes pizza to cruise ship offers, to bank scams.

Does this happen to other Kogan users? I am sure I didn't tick any boxes to accept promotions.

  • Just a suggestion, but perhaps one or more of your family member's phones have malware installed, and the spammers are getting it from them? (unbeknown to them of course).

  • Although a quick Google search revealed this….

    • so from what I read, if you're activating a new Kogan number you might get spam, but for people porting in an existing number should be fine.

I think I can see what's happening here. As mtg below says "numbers get recycled after a while", those who choose a new/recycled number are getting someone else's old Kogan number. Since Kogan have so many of these cheap deals, "sim sluts" are using these numbers when signing up for Ozbargain deals when they don't want to use their real number(to prevent spam). The number is later recycled and the next person to get that Kogan number gets all the spam. So I don't believe Kogan are to blame.

  • It's happened to the last 3 Optus prepaid SIMs I activated recently. Theres a lot of spam out there hammering mobile numbers which I assume is linked to the short term usage of those numbers. Who knows how many tourists or people who just activated the SIM to enter competitions and stuff like that which used the number prior to my use of it.

  • numbers get recycled after a while

    • ^this, some assigned numbers i'll get lots of spam, some numbers get none

  • I receive calls from WA on my current 2-month old amaysim number. Callers usually demand to know who I am and how I come to possess the number. Last call received yesterday at 1:30AM NSW (10:30PM WA). I am going to disconnect this number.

  • Every time I get one of their Simms the spam starts again. Tried sending them to spam folder in Outlook but they keep coming. Must have an arrangement with Microsoft to get away with this.
