Wireless Media Transfer Hub

i have a movie collection in harddrive and like to watch them on iPads, mobile without having to store them in the devices.

Looked at external wireless hard drives from seagate, WD, Lucie and also looked at RAV power file hub, hootoo wireless hub. Confused on which to choose?

Should i limit to 1 portal wireless drive or should it be better to buy file hub and make use of any harddrive. Any experience on these products? Please suggest.

  • I grabbed a Strontium Mobile Wifi Cloud from catch.com for $15. It has a USB port and card readers and an 8 hour battery for flights/travelling. Definitely happy with it for the price paid!

    • Thanks. Looks very similar to RAV hub. Btw how good is the range? Do we have to be closer? Multiple device streaming possible?

      • I haven’t really rested beyond a couple of metres. I think it’s advertised as multiple connections and I reckon you’d be ok depending on the bit rate of the video files.

  • If you just have 1 main PC that DL holds short term then deletes without transfer to a NAS or other long term storage just install serviio on the PC and avia or vlc on the android tablets. I don't have ipad but they should have same apps.
At no financial cost all linked devices should connect and stream anything selected on each device simultaneously.

Setup Plex media server and stream them from any device even away from home.

    • This.

    • Thanks, yes thats a great idea. Explored it and its so simple to setup and use.

But this will work great provided, i have a spare PC connected on Web all the time, and also other devices to stream need to have connectivity wifi or data to stream, hmmm if a kids movie is watched multiple times, then this will blow out the data…

Also i am looking for something portal to use during camp trips, long flight or car journey…

You can set up a Plex server on a raspberry pi. Connect it to a portable HDD and you're good to go.

When you're at home using your home wifi Plex will not use any data. It simply runs on your internal network.

If you open Plex up to the outside, then yes streaming from Plex to your 4g, for example, will use data.

        • Yes, i understand. Have set it up yesterday and works great within home.

          Thanks
