New to Photography, Is This a Good Deal for First Camera? (Fuji x-series)

Hey guys,

Looking at getting into photography as a new hobby and after much research, I've settled on Mirrorless cameras over DSLR.

I think I've narrowed my options to these two cameras, though happy to consider others.

  1. Fujifilm xt-20
  2. Fuji film x-t2

I can grab a used xt-20 in fairly good condition with a 18-55 2.8-4 lens and a 27mm 2.8 lens for $1,000. Is this a reasonable price or should I keep looking around?

Also, do you think the extra price is worth paying for the x-t2 or is it not necessary?

Thanks in advance!

Fujis are fantastic cameras. I've been through a few of them and they're a great way to learn about photography and be inspired to do it.

The X-T20 is a nice little camera. If you're getting started I don't think spending more for an X-T2 is worth it. The 27mm is a cool little pancake but is a little "weird" if you're only starting, being not quite a standard length, and not quite wide. I'd suggest getting yourself some cheap manual (Zonlai, Meike) lenses instead. They're not exactly sharp, but are super fun and will teach you more about what a specific length does so you can upgrade to proper fuji glass later on.

I have the XT-20 and love it, the lens mentioned are also great all-rounder.

As a new hobby, go with X-T20. It has the same IQ as X-T2. Have X-T20 and they are a really good camera.

    • Ok great. Do you think 1k for the body and those 2 lenses I mentioned in my post are a good deal?

      • It’s a good price. 18-55mm is a good way to start to see what focal length you like the most. Then you can move to prime lenses (I personally prefer prime lenses).

I've had one Fuji in the past and really love the colour tone. Its so good I don't need to do much editing apart from basic adjustment. But these days I'm only shooting Sony so I dont know much about Fuji. However, one piece of advice (from my own experience anyway) is to play around with low light lenses, you'll more likely to have more fun learning photography because you'll get excited with how good a nice bokeh can make your picture look.

I'd probably go 35mm f1.4 or 50mm f1.4 field length/aperture combination because I'm more of a portrait/street photography guy. Although I think XT-20 is an APS-C sensor so take the crop factor into consideration. f2.8 is OK but personally I think its not low enough to make you excited about the bokeh :)

Prime lens is also great to teach you to think more about your framing. With zoom lenses people tend to zoom in and out while snapping, without giving much thought about the framing. Whereas prime lens will force you to either step closer or further, which is not as impulsive as zooming and hence your brain thinks a bit more. I find myself less lazy when I'm on my prime lenses. You really only need zoom lenses to cover fast moving live event IMO anyway.

    • Thanks for your tips, will look into that!
