Sydney Firefighters Climbing Sydney Tower Eye 98 Stories for MND

Great for charity, but here is my question:
What if just a moment after the training, there is a real fire at another high-rise. Would these guys have a backup legs?
Would the reserve fighters have the legs to climb that high-rises?

Thanks

    "have a backup legs"
No sorry. After the climb they will be undertaking an English course.

    So from your article:

About 600 firies will make the climb, powering up 98 floors of Sydney’s tallest building wearing more than 20kg of gear.

    From the Wikipedia page here:

Fire and Rescue NSW is the seventh largest urban fire service in the world, with over 6,800 firefighters serving at 339 fire stations throughout the state

So less than 10% of all firefighters are participating, and I'm going to go out on a limb and just assume, since they're emergency services, that the ones participating are off-duty at the time.

    • Fair enough. How many days the 600 needed to recover?

Probably less time than if they were actually called out to a fire and had to climb a similar number of stairs. Plus, a lot of these guys would probably jog or do other exercise on their days off too.

Im reasonably unfit - used to be an ex smoker of 10 years. I can go for a half day mountain bike ride and back it up with a gym session and still be fine to do it the next day. Its really not that big of a deal.

The guys doing the climbing wouldn't be on shift. They would have a few trucks and appliances there, but most likely is they have taken them offline and got another unit to cover where the vehicles are coming from. In the event of a big disaster the vehicles would likely be pulled away to active duty again.

Are they all doing it on a day off or are we paying for it.

I did the City2Sea in Melbourne and Eureka Climb (88 floors) back to back on the same day (ran back from St Kilda to Eureka, all up about 22km).
I was going well, passing most people going up. The fire fighters would go past me like I was standing still and in their full gear with respirators.

The thing is, they train for this as it is their job. The only difference is that they train for the building to also be on fire at the same time, so if anything this is easier than what they're already prepared for.

A work out for them, some good publicity and it is for charity. What is not to like for this.

A friend did this last year.
    Not on shift.
He was pretty tired after, and sore the next couple of days.
I would rather he and his mates be training and keeping fit for things like this than sitting around eating donuts when the time comes to fight a real fire.
