Trying to Look for a New Career in Banking Industry - Need Some Help Perfecting My Resume / Cover Letter

Hi there.

I'm in the gaming industry and have some work experience in analyst role for probably 8 months and also working in multiple departments.

I'm trying to apply for roles in the banking industry (no experience besides analytic role) cause that's what I am studying for but I keep getting rejected. I'm good with excel and have experience in microstrategy

Looking for complimentary professional help in checking my cv and cover letter to see how I can sell myself more.

Thanks

I think whirlpool is a better site for that sort of resume/career advice.

Ozb is for bikies, well-informed professional legal advice, and parking/traffic accidents in MS paint.

    • This guy gets it.

    • Can't forget the user's who had their "friend" involved in a crash and doesn't have any insurance

    • dun forget cheap asians

Add something about Westpac, high yield investment cars…

  • "I'm trying to apply for roles in the banking industry (no experience besides analytic role) cause that's what I am studying for but I keep getting rejected. I'm good with excel and have experience in microstrategy"

Do you have your own gun and mask?

  • What sort of roles are you applying for? Are they reasonable for your experience level?

  • Maquarie bank use Microstrategy.. so do APRA.

Other then that your looking at Metcash, Chanel 7, Coles to name a few non banking.

P.s. hard to get a new role with < 1 yr experience

  • ‘I'm in the gaming industry and have some work experience in analyst role for probably 8 months and also working in multiple departments.’

This is so vague it has no information about what you can bring to your new employer. It only highlights potential weakness, ie, you spent 8 months in multiple roles, which means there is no reasonable chance you have accumulated any meaningful experience.

If this is how you are selling yourself in a resume, you definitely need to be more specific. As an example, what is the gaming industry (gambling, developing graphics for a computer game, writing storyline, you won local scrabble tournament)? What did you actually do as an analyst?

  • Keep working at your current analyst job if you're still there. 8 months is not enough to crack into banking.

    • Nah they are gonna make this role over soon. I'm just covering for now.

  • I've found that lying on your application can get you into almost any job you want. Keeping it long term is the challenge though.

Sorry not my cup of tea

  • how I can sell myself more

What are you like in terms of substance? Smarts, diligence, etc.?

If you lack substance, no amount of selling will help.

    banking industry

Specifically which part? E.g. treasury, institutional, retail banking?

  • besides analytic role

What sort of analytical role did you do before? Similar to a business analyst?

The skills of a business analyst are transferable across industries. There'll still be a learning curve in relation to the banking industry, but the logic and skills will already be there. It takes a certain type of person to be a business analyst.

The only problem I see can see right now would be your location. Most of the analyst roles in banking are in sydney and melbourne where the head offices are.

The best way in is always through connections. Someone in the industry who knows your capabilities and is willing to give you an opportunity to prove yourself.

  • For someone in the banking industry at the moment the only advice and off course this is my opinion and my colleague and my wider network's opinion… do not go any where near banks!!! 2 industry's mate e-gaming and cyber security, start off in a software company even as a sales manager booking appointments for bdms and work your way up to a bdm, the whole banking industry is going through change at the moment, no matter how you look at it whether you think its a good or bad change its still a difficult time.. ohhh btw they are getting rid of commissions in banks also.
