2005 Honda Civic 185000km (Engine Oil Question)

Hi all,

I got this civic recently and needs service. According to the manual the car needs 0w-20. I rangup the mechanic to ask if they have this one in their workshop and he said the car is old so it will need a thicker viscosity oil but they use repco's cheap oil which i dont want pumped in to my car.

Please recommend any oil.

Not starting another 'thick oil for old cars thread', but if cars needed thick oil as they aged, SURELY the manual would state this. PS, they don't.

For a car that age, either…
    1. DIY
    2. supply the oil and filter yourself AND MAKE SURE THEY USE IT (and not just keep your oil and put in their shit)

Honda motors are generally very well built. If the motor is a little noisy or blowing a bit of blue smoke, you may choose to use a thicker oil, but that'd be just covering up the inevitable. Modern motor oils are very good at doing their job.

Speak to your local mechanics or auto store for their recommendations, but here are some oils I found using the respective 'lube finders' (no particular order and assuming 1.7L engine):

    5W30/10W30 Grade (full-synth):

    Nulon 5W-30 Long Life Performance
    MOBIL 1 5W-30
    Helix HX7 SN 10W-30

    5W40/10W40 Grade (full-synth):

    Penrite HPR 5 5W-40
    Gulf Western Syn-X 5000 10W-40
    Helix HX7 10W-40

I personally go with Nulon or Mobil. Have heard good things regarding Shell and Gulf Western. Was very keen on Penrite oil, but lately haven't been too impressed (maybe just placebo compared to other oils).

Can I nominate this for "Most informative post"? Well said and I like the comment on disposal. Most people overlook this aspect of servicing their own vehicle.

      • Thanks man. Bought penrite 10w-40 from repco as this is also currently on half price.

  • I have a 2005 Honda & it just clicked over 200,000kms
    The manual recommends 5W-20

only use thicker oil if it uses oil, like blowing past rings, but it is better to do the motor up or get a 2nd hand motor from the wreckers
you are coming up for a timimg belt at 200,000, if you are in Melb, or close, I suggest Hondworld in Clayton
    cheers

    • Thanks for the tips man. Previous owner did the belt change at 40k km so the next was due at 150k km which was missed. You reckon its ok to drive till 200k?

      • no sweat
        Do the belt every 100,000kms
you never know when it will break, it is cheaper than the alternative
also change the water pump at the same time
I got my parts from here:-
        https://www.alliedautomotive.com.au/login?return=my-garage
change oil & filter every 10,000kms without fail
I used to be a mechanic but my old back is useless, that is why I got someone else to do the job

        • My mechanic quoted me $700 for the job and $80 for the rocket gaskit.

        • Did you get the timing belt and wpump free from Allied and got someone to do the job? How much was the total cost?

          • @[Deactivated]: when you get parts off a company, you have to give them money in return

I got Hondworld in Melb to do the work as my back is stuffed

I also got a C/O gearbox & clutch assy fitted at the same time. I also had other things done like change the clutch & brake fluids, oil & filter, spark plugs plus other things. With all the parts & labor, it cost me about $2400 all up

            • @the Unforgiven: of course, you pay for the goods you buy. lol sorry man that a typo in my last comment.

  • Mechanic is right. It's a low value car. Changing the oil would be 50% of it's replacement cost. No point buying overly expensive oil.

Slightly thicker oil would be recommend if it was using oil. I would not put $100/bottle oil in it. Just not worth it. And you would find that "repco" oil would just be rebranded oil from one of the oil manufacturers. So long as it meets the minimum standards, it would be fine.

  • If the car is consuming oil more over time a thicker oil would help with that. Otherwise keep using the recommended oil, just wait for a supercheap sale!

    • I got three bottles of Penrite 10w-40 (conventional) for 25ea. Also, its a 6 ltr bottle :)

  • Oil & filter change on a D17Z1 motor uses 3.5 litres of oil
