Please Recommend Me a PC Power Supply in the 650w Range

Hello, I've got a GTX1080 arriving Monday, my current power supply is old, still works and I wouldn't have bought junk but I would have been frugal…

It doesn't have the 6 AND 8 pin gfx card power that my new card will need, I'm hoping someone can recommend one.

I'm thinking 650w cause I tend to run a lot of HDD and my soundcard needs power etc, three fans.

Beyond price, my only concern is noise, otherwise, I'd just buy something that fits the bill from a trusted brand. Not fussed on RGB or anything, but if the cheapest quietest reputable one has RGB I'll cope.

Thanks!

Find a few in your price range and power requirements and then see if Jonny Guru has done a review on it. He does some very in-depth analysis of PSUs from solder and component quality to noise and ripple of supply. Generally Seasonic is the go-to brand for quality.

  • I bought a Corsair 80 Plus Gold Full Modular RM650i for $158 down from $175 on sale from MSY a few months ago. Currently running an RTX 2080 and i7 8700. Its doing great. How much money were you hoping to get away with spending?

    • Ha! I know that the PSU is way more important than it is interesting or "cool" but I still want to spend as little as possible (without purchasing hot garbage)

      • A Corsair unit would be a wise investment and peace of mind. Rock solid and quality products. Don't cheap out on power supply when you've invested in a GTX1080…

        • Yeah,I edited my last comment but I guess too late.

I know how to buy a quality unit but noise is one of those things you just don't really know till you've got it home

          • @jonathonsunshine: I'm running a [Corsair Professional AX860 Fully Modular 80 PLUS Platinum 860W PSU] that's whisper quiet. Purchased March 2013 to run GTX Titans in SLI and running solid since. Modular as well so don't have unnecessary cables floating around.

Might be a bit more than you want to pay but there'll be other non-platinum variants for less money. Have a look at the available offerings.

Edit: RM650i defo seems to suit your needs: https://www.corsair.com/us/en/Power/Plug-Type/rmi-series-con…

    • In summation though $100 to $150 (unless I get shouted down that that's too cheap)

  • I’m actually in the market for a new one myself after the second one in my system is causing me all sorts of issues (got sold a “Voltron Armageddon” PSU by a local store which after looking online are absolute trash) I’m currently leaning toward Corsair but there are so many options.

    • That's my drama as well.

    • Wow, the name doesn't fill me with confidence. Rather get a SparkMax Destroyer Series.

  • Corsair RM650x/i are a solid choice. Also anything by seasonic

  • Also, a friend has a Corsair VS550, its a budget model but NVidia lists recommended PSU for a 1080 as 500w. If I yank all the unnecessary stuff, i can get the system down to 378W.

Think that will tide me over till I get something better?
