Xbox One S - Worth It over PS4?

So I've been having a hell of a lot of issues with my PC recently (mostly used parts) and I was thinking of buying an Xbox One S. Why? well to have it as a backup mainly for when a component in my PC dies again. I also just found out that Xbox supports FreeSync and I have a FreeSync monitor which is why I'm considering it over the PS4. I've never had a PC that ran games maxed out so I don't really mind playing on lower settings, however, I'm wondering just how bad the One S will look on a 24'' 1080P monitor.

Is there a way to buy one cheap? my budget is 300 max which is why I'm considering Xbox One S and not the X as that costs twice as much.
Where can I find a good deal on the Xbox One S…except here? My first thought was gumtree with my budget of 300 but I can't seem to find a good deal as they cost almost as much as they do new.

Although on the other hand I really find the games on PS4 interesting. God Of War, Spider Man, Last Of Us etc. So is FreeSync and Win 10 integration worth it over the exclusives?

  • You have asked the wrong question from what I read above?

The last sentence sums up what you're actually trying to work out, which is also something we can't answer for you it's personal preference. Once you have figured that out then you have your answer.

The cost benefit is actually on what you're going to get the most enjoyment out of not which system is better.

Value for Money I'd say Xbox 1s all day for bang for your buck, my preference is PS due to certain titles.

I'm Surprised you can't find any good deals in line with budget

    • Well there's nothing here and staticice isn't showing any deal. Gumtree is hit or miss I'll keep checking it but at the moment I have not found anything worth buying. If I find something for at least $100 cheaper than it would be new then that's where I'd go in but I have not found anything of such sort so far that's not on the other side of the city. I would like to get the very most out of the money and go for the cheapest option possible, as I will still play most of my games on PC.
If I buy new I'll probably get warranty until the new consoles come out.

  • Neither over Neither

    • Do you think it's wiser to save until I can get the one X or the Pro? or not buy a console in general?

I'm not to sure what your question is, if you're looking for a comparison, personally I prefer my PS4, while I like my xbox most games either come out on PS4 exclusive or on both, end of the day more of my friends are on PS4 so its easier and preferred for me.

No idea about graphics though, they both look great to me, but obviously you're not getting the high quality versions (Xbox one x or PS4 Pro) but personally never had an issue with how things look.

Price wise though I think the xbox is cheaper typically and works well (at least for me), having a basic scan around though and seems most prices out there for an xbox one s is about $399, thats pretty insane, I bought an xbox one s about 1.6 years ago with 12 months gold and Dark souls 3, battlefield 1 and extended warranty for 3 years and that was only like $340 or something back then.

Some good sales for the xbox console occasionally, I'd definitely wait for one if I was keen for an xbox as prices right now seem too much. I will say though that the xbox one x has some awesome backwards compatible games though, I love replaying from back in the day.

    • Well I guess I do go back and forth in the post but the question I guess I'm asking is in the final sentence as the guy above pointed out. Whether FreeSync and Windows 10 integration with the one S is better than the exclusives of the PS4? or like in the title which is better, Xbox one S or PS4?
Right now browsing through gumtree I've actually found more deals on PS4 (base models) than Xbox One S so I can't make up my mind on which one to go for and when I do go for it, how much should I pay?

  • I've always disliked Xbox - it just feels inferior quality. but I wish that the PS4 had backwards-comp and cross-play. Those are killer features and they both seem to not be a technical limitation on Sony's part, rather their hubris.

PS4 is actually getting name changes and allowing cross play I think soon: https://www.kotaku.com.au/2018/09/sony-is-finally-allowing-c…

Though I agree with you wholeheartedly about Sonys hubris, I'm glad they're finally getting these features, but it took major backlash to get them to listen.

      • Backwards comp is a technical limitation though. The PS3s architecture is not compatible with the current modern architecture. Xbox 360 used the same architecture as Xbox One and PS4. It is very likely that the next PS will include Backwards comp as Sony have since updated their hardware to more modern standards.

  • If you have 4k TV, or plan on getting one any time soon…. Then the xbox one s adds significant value just as a 4k disk player for films etc.
I have ps4 pro and xbox one X . Had the normal ps4 and xbox one s previously.
Certainly ps4 has more and better exclusives.
But if you are only getting one console, and cannot afford xbox one X or ps4 pro, I would go for ps4, if not getting 4k tv soon, xbox one s as a must, if getting 4k tv soon (and wanting to watch 4k discs)

    • I don't have plans of getting a 4K display anytime soon as I have purchased a 144hz monitor and now I don't want to go back to 60hz even if it's 4K. I can't afford the one X or that would be my first and last choice as it's the most powerful console. I'm split pretty 50-50 between the exclusives vs windows integration and freesync so I think I will make the decision on price. I will wait for a deal and whichever console it is I will purchase it.

Given you're a pc gamer, Xbox might be a good option for cross-play, with the ability to play your Xbox One games on pc without having to re-buy them.

    • I was thinking the same… if OP gets PC fixed or new gaming PC, digital games on the xbox can be played on PC for no extra charge.
Does this work if you have the physical disx copy on xbox one ? ie. Can you then have download on pc without buying game again.

    PS4 has the exclusives.

    • Yes. I decided to go with the S because it's simply a lot cheaper everywhere I looked. Now only to find a good deal lol.

  • Xbox always has deals lately. Are you a student? There's a great deal on Unidays where you get an Xbox one s game bundle with an extra controller for $299. There was jb ones too recently. I'm sure one will pop up. I was in the same position lately and decided to go with the Xbox and I'm very happy. The games look great in 1080p and 4k upscaled and it's a great media player. The apps are more plentiful and useful than my housemates PS4. Remember we're getting an Xbox event soon too with hopefully some new exclusives!

    • I am a student. I just went on the website you listed and when signing up my school doesn't show up as a Perth school but instead a NSW school wth?

    • Yeah I found it now. This is definitely the best deal I found however there's no good games with it. Sea Of Thieves was a huge flop from what I heard, pubg is dying and runs like crap, haven't played Minecraft in years and the last bundle there is Rocket League - A game I like but is it worth it?
It's a good deal but definitely not as good as past deals. Is it wiser to wait?
When you bought it from microsoft, how long did you have to wait for delivery? I hate waiting as I'm in WA so deliveries take ages. Often I just pay more to buy local.

      • I actually didn't buy from Microsoft, as I didn't want to wait for postage. I price matched them with Harvey Norman who gave me a different coloured controller and let me switch the game for the same price. I just showed them the price on the site. I got lucky I guess! Jb had a deal for $329 and you got an extra controller and FIFA(?) I think.

        • price match hugh idk how that works ill try and do it
what should i say? since it's a student offer and not the base price
edit : was denied because apparently it's a 'bundle' and bundles can not be price matched as to their terms, anything that's listed as 'bundle' on HN's website can not be price matched :(

          • @Ostrk: Sorry mate yeah they're hit and miss and personally ive never been able to get JB to price match anything. They always give me a counter offer and say that's the lowest theyll go. Like I said I must have gotten lucky with HN. I'm sure youll find a good deal.

  • I got my One S on Gumtree for 280 purely as a UHD Blu-Ray player. Suggest you setup a Gumtree alert, bargains do exist there.

    • I was about to get a 500GB one for 200 yesterday but decided to hold out and wait for a deal on OZB for a new one.
edit : just looked looks like bigw is having a sale on it in the next few days

  • The One S isn't as powerful as the standard PS4, more games on it scale the resolution below 1080p to keep the frame rate stable than the PS4. So it may end up looking blurry. Not sure it would be noticeable on a 24" monitor though.
