Custom Building Birds Aviary

I have a few hand tame birds which I want to have a good flying space in a cage. Would love to let them go free, but I don't think they will survive as they were hand reared and does not have survival instincts for the wild.

I have see some bird aviaries for sale and I think they are ridiculously high priced. Anyhow I was looking into building my own aviary (without base) to setup in backyard.

I am not good and building hardware, but I was thinking if I can build a rectangular structure from pipes or woods, then I can put mesh around it. But what about the entrance door? building that will be tricky.

Can anyone advice me if stores like bunnings would have the parts/door required to build my own aviary?

Would really appreciate an advice.

I only studied ornithology for two years so take this as unprofessional advice only.

If you don't already have basic tools (ie drill and saw) it might turn out more expensive.

Have you tried second hand off Gumtree or Facebook marketplace ?

Yes to make a door you can just use hinges to attach something that can open and close to part of the frame .

  • Could just make it out of conduit tees and elbows and glue it together when you think it's right. All you need is a hacksaw and tape.

Make a double door by stitching 2 bits of bird mesh together like a double door enter into the 2 pieces then exit/enter through the next

  • Maybe just pick up a second hand screen door from gumtree etc then make a basic frame for it. I’ve seen a few aviaries like that.

  • Best/safest door design is to have a small, separate entry you open and step into, then close behind you— then a door to the actual aviary. No escapes that way.

This is a good place for ideas:
