Where to Get a Cracked Mag/Alloy Wheel Repaired

Hey All,

I have a small crack in one of my 17x7 alloy wheels for my 2014 VW golf. I'm wondering if it is possible to get it repaired and where might the best place in Sydney? And if someone has had a similar experience what was the cost to repair.

The tyre itself is fine but the rim has a small crack which caused the air to leak. Dropped from 32 PSI to 17 PSI in one day before swapping to the spare.

Thanks

I only know where to get 19x8.5 forged wheels for my 2019 Audi RS3. Just kidding. I drive a beat Corolla.

In all seriousness though, sounds like you have a common model golf. Try wreckers/gumtree. Potentially cheaper than getting it fixed.

I had a damaged wheel a few years ago and got a whole new set with 50% tyres on Gumtree for around the same cost as a repair.

  • I had a dent in my alloy wheel and apparently unlike metal rims it can't be repaired. I went to a few wreckers but couldn't find it. I ended up looking through loads of photos until I found the right one on Gumtree and got a replacement for $100 or so.

    • They can be fixed if its a super expensive unique wheel, but when its off a Golf you wouldn't bother.

Steel wheels can be fixed more easily (eg. with a hammer) but if its cracked you also wouldn't bother unless it was super rare).

  • buy a spare from a wrecker.

Don't fix a crack, it's not worth the safety issues.

As said, scour Gumtree for another rim

  • About 5 years ago, when I used to live in Sydney, I had a similar issue and lots of tyre places recommended a shop called magman wheels- I think its on moxon rd in punchbowl. A guy named greg used to own/run it an he was a genius with rims!

he was good at rim jobs?

    • He may be now at Riverwood. Google Magman Workshop for wheels.

    Another option:

I had 1 cracked wheel, after being disappointed and at the quality and price of second hand ones to replace it I purchased a set of new wheels and sold the other 3 on ebay and ended up making a profit.

  • Thanks all!
